Troubleshooting SH Error Code on a Prodigy P2 Brake Controller

Question:

I have a Ford F100 ute 1979 that hauls a 3.5 ton trailer which is setup like a semi-trailer turn tablecalled a 5th wheeler and has worked brilliantly. The controller is a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 #90885. I recently put a tow-bar to pull a small trailer with a separate plug, but the moment I plug the trailer in it shows the 5H error code. The question is will it cause any damage to the controller if I just use it and ignore the error? Note! There are two connections for he 5th wheeler and one connection for the trailer.

The code you are seeing on your Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885 indicates that there is a short on the brake output circuit. Since you have two trailers and this code appears when the second one is attached the problem is somewhere on the second trailer. If that error code is displaying the controller wouldn't work properly so I would recommend you track down the problem and fix it.

A dirty or corroded trailer connector can cause a short. Clean out any dirt or corrosion you find. Corrosion can also build up in the backs of the connectors where the wires attach.

Next check the trailer wiring to the brake magnets. You will be looking for any nicks in the wiring that show exposed wire touching the trailer frame. Also check the trailer magnet ground wires and make sure they are attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces.

Then you can inspect the magnets. If you can see the windings coming through they will need to be replaced. To further test the magnets, I have included a link to an FAQ article that will help you.
