Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Detailed Breakdown of the Hub-Piloted Solid Center Wheel w +0.19" Offset

Hello, everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at the 17 1/2 inch by 6 3/4 inch hub-piloted gray solid center steel wheel with the 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern and a positive offset. Now, this wheel is a sturdy steel construction. And this is a hub-piloted wheel, which means it'll center on the hub here, not on the lugs. So when you do install this wheel on your hub, this hole is gonna slide right onto the hub, it's gonna have the exact diameter. The pilot hole diameter on this is 4.76 inches.

And because it's hub-piloted, the bolt holes are non-chamfered, 'cause it doesn't have to center using the lugs, it'll use the pilot hole. So it does require the use of flange nuts for installation. Those we do sell separately on our website. They do require a size of 5/8 inch by 18 size flange nuts, and they go by a part number of 95188. And just to show you what we're talking about, I happen to pull one of those.

And here's what the flange nut looks like. So basically, you can see it has a flange on it. When you put this up on the hub, put this onto the stud, and you can tighten it down to hold the wheel in place. Now, we mentioned this wheel does have a positive offset. And when I mentioned the offset, offset is always measured from the center line of the wheel, so in other words, into the mounting surface.

So if the mounting surface is lined up exactly on the center, that's zero, that's a starting point. If this mounting surface would move to the front of the wheel, that's gonna be positive offset, if it moves to the back of the wheel, that's negative offset. And the positive offset on this wheel is 0.19 inches, so it's moving that much, 0.19 inches. So what that's doing is it's moving this wheel closer to the trailer frame. Now, this does give excellent corrosion resistance, 'cause it uses a gray powder coat finish over an e-coat primer.

And the wheel is a high quality wheel, meets the DOT, Department of Transportation specifications. Few measurements on this, we're gonna measure the diameter. The diameter will always be measured inside to inside. So if we take our tape measure and if we go inside to inside, there's your 17 1/2 inch diameter. If we measure the width, same way, it's inside to inside or bead seat to bead seat. So there's your 6 3/4 inches wide. And the bolt pattern on this wheel is 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern. And if you wanna measure the bolt pattern on a wheel that's an even number of lugs like this one's an eight lug, it's pretty easy, 'cause if you look at the lug holes, you can see they're directly across from each other. So all you have to do is pick any hole, let's say this one, and then measure from the center of this hole directly across to the center of the hole right across from it. So on this wheel, it'll measure 6 1/2 inches, so it's an 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Weight capacity on this wheel is 6,005 pounds. But that's gonna do it for the review on the 17 1/2 inch by 6 3/4 inch hub-piloted gray solid center steel wheel with the 8 on 6 1/2 inch bolt pattern.
