When snow and ice hit, traction matters. These chains offer ladder and H pattern options with square or twist links to bite into packed snow, deep snow, and mud on tractors, loaders, and skid steers. Match them to your tire size for proper fit; consider rubber tensioners for a snug install and check inside clearance near the frame.
Lay the chains out, drape them over the tire, and snug them evenly; they can be a bit of a wrestling match. Rubber tensioners help maintain tension. Without wheel spacers, check inside clearance—zip tie everything tight and add a small bungie across the tread at the closure point to help prevent the chains from contacting the frame. Some cam styles may need a cam tool.
Pick square links if you need bite on packed snow and ice; they do a great job of giving traction. Twist links are designed for deep snow and mud and work on and off road. Match the chain style to your surface and your tire type, like R4 tires that do poorly on packed snow/ice and benefit from added traction.
Read the tire sidewall and match the exact size, like 365/70-18, 17.5L-24, 15-19.5, 13.6-16, or 13.6-28. A width change of about 3 inches can prevent one chain from fitting both sizes. If a chain seems long, tensioners can take up slack; some sizes are not required to be cut. Don't swap chains between different sizes expecting a fit.
Both work for traction, but H pattern provides a consistent amount of traction across the tread. Ladder pattern is a standard choice and is offered with square or twist links. Choose based on your surface and whether you want more continuous contact from side to side.
