I got in touch with Thule, and they stated that the Thule 589 Velo Vise on its own will only work with square bars like you mentioned. The Thule Bike Square Bar Adapter you mentioned would only be needed if you had square bars that you needed to use with a bike rack that wasn't made for square bars.
