Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, and how they may affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The pewag Servo RS self-tensioning tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you might want to get a chain with V-bar links that can bite into the ice you need to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install. Unlike other self-tensioning chains, the Servo RS have tensioning devices built into the side chains so there's no need to route additional tensioners when you install them. Just make a couple connections, move the button on the ratcheting device to "drive," and you'll be able to see the chains begin to tension. Because they self-tension more and self-center as you drive, these chains will give you a perfect fit, no matter the profile or wear pattern of your tire. Plus, you only have to get out of your vehicle one time - once they're installed, there's no need to drive forward, stop, and check their tension.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's user manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the side wall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is simple.
  1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.
  2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the cable, which will sit behind the tire.
  3. Connect the inner chain to the outer traction chain at the bottom of the tire using the large red hook, then activate the servo device to ratchet the chain tightly into place.
  4. Once all the connections are made, move the switch on the ratchet back to "drive." The rachet will tension the chains, then center and fully tighten them on your wheels as you drive forward, giving you a perfect fit.

Removing the chains is as quick and easy as putting them on. Just move the switch to "open," pull the cable to give the chains some slack, and disconnect.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

  • Recommended Tire Chains for 2006 Jaguar XJ With 235/50r18 Tires
The Konig Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains # th02230k45 are confirmed to fit your 2006 Jaguar XJ Series with 235/50r18 tires and I do not see any issues with this setup. The only thing I would say is that it takes some time to install these chains, so if you don't plan on keeping them installed for a long time then I would go with a different set of chains. I personally would go with the pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Tire Chains - 1 Pair # PWRS77 instead. This offers a much simpler...

  • Recommended Tire Chains And Installation On 2004 Toyota Sienna
In your owners manual for your 2004 Toyota Sienna, the online manual states snow tires or chains are recommended when driving on snow or ice. It states to use SAE class S type radial tire chains except radial cable chains or V-bar type chains. You are to use them on the front tires and are given instructions to not use chains on the rear tires. This is according to page 468 of the online 2004 Toyota Sienna manual. For instance, for 215/65-16 tires, I recommend the 2004 Toyota Sienna...

  • Tire Chains for a 2008 Volvo S-80 AWD
When a vehicle owner's manual or manufacturer says something like Use only Volvo approved chains that means they want you to buy them from Volvo or a Volvo dealer when in reality they should just tell you what makes chains approved or not. Basically you will need Class S compatible chains or cables because there is limited clearance between the tires and vehicle components. Also, on your vehicle the chains should only be used on the front wheels. If you are able to turn off any type of...

  • Speed Rating and Operational Use of Snow Tire Chains
The Pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Tire Chains - 1 Pair # PWRS77 are great quality chains that are not difficult to install. They are made of titanium allow steel which makes them very strong and corrosion resistant. The speed rating for this set of chains is 25-30 mph. This is not just for these chains but is the industry standard. Tire chains are not for use on any roads where the pavement is bare. Using them above that speed or on bare pavement can cause loss of traction and even...

The Thule chains you have are great and unfortunately are no longer being made. If you are concerned about the chains, then I recommend the Pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Tire Chains # PWRS77 are great for your application. They only require 15mm of internal clearance to operate and that is Class S compatible for minimal clearances. I wouldn't hesitate to use your current chains if they are in good condition. The Pewag option is a replacement recommendation if your chains are not in...
