Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig XB-16 Pro tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable and easy to mount. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they have built-in tensioners that you can just pull taut to adjust the fit. These tensioners allow the chains to fit your tires, no matter the profile or wear pattern. And because the tensioners are built-in, you never have to worry about losing them like you might with other chains on the market.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the chains.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip and tug it until it's tight.

Stretch the hook across the tire

5. Feed the tensioning chain through as many red clips along the side chain as you can, leaving room to still be able to stretch the hook across the tire. Attach the hook to the side chain directly across from the last clip you ran the tensioner through. The hook should face away from your tire.

6. Drive forward around 325' (about the length of a football field) and stop. Check the chains and tighten them as needed.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Hands-On with the Konig Commercial Truck Tire Chains

Adam: Hi guys, it's Adam with etrailer.com. Today we're going to be looking at the Konig XB-16 series snow tire chains. These tire chains are going to come in handy to keep in the back of your pickup or in your SUV, RV, to get you out of those snowier, icier situations. What makes these XB series tire chains really, really easy, it has a built-in self-tensioner to basically keep your chains wrapped around your tire while you're going down the road. With most tire chains, basically what you've got to do is you've got to purchase a separate little piece to tension your chains to your tire, but in the XB series 16, basically it is all built-in, so it's just one piece and you just got to put it on real quick and get down the road. These tire chains are going to have a nice, even tire pattern all the way around your tire and it's going to distribute that chain surface to the ground evenly to get you stopped, started, and turning properly. These XB-16 series tire chains are going to be a D-link style made of hardened steel. These D-link style tire chains are going to be in the middle of your aggressive side V-bar style links being at your top most aggressive and your rounded link style at the very, very low end of that. These tire chains do come in a very, very nice, sturdy handling case. It's going to be easy to take them off and store them away without them getting tangled. Some of these snow tire chains have come in a little cloth bag, which rips over time.

This is a very sturdy case and they come in a pair of two and I'm going to show you how easy it is to install these on your vehicle. The first thing you're going to want to do before installing your tire chains is lay them all out flat, make sure there's no kinks in your links or any hang-ups anywhere. One thing you do want to note, you want to have this smooth side facing in towards your tire when you install.First thing you want to do is start fishing this cable to the front of your vehicle, behind your tire, trying to get it evenly distributed behind that tire. Then what you're going to want to do is, behind your tire, grab these cables and lock them into place. And while you're back here, grab your chains and start draping them over your tire, making sure that this little cross point right here is in the center of your tread.Once you have your tire chains in place, next thing you want to do, take this red hook and hook it onto the red link. Just like so.And the next thing we need to do is use the manual tensioning mechanism that's built in to the XB series, and basically all you do, you take the plastic part of your chain, pull back this hammer, fish it in there, and pull it as tight as you think is fit.Once that's done, Konig went ahead and gave us some red color coordinated clips and basically you just snap those into place and then find the right link to get the right amount of pressure. And as you can see, these are very tight on the tire, but we do recommend that you put it in drive, roll it over a couple times, and then come back out and just make sure that everything is just as tight as it was before.Well, that's going to do it for our Konig XB-16 series snow tire chains.

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for Tire Sizes 215/60R16 and 235/45R17
Tire chain fits are very specific. Rarely do we see a customer be able to do what you are wanting to do and use one set of chains on both vehicles. The part # TH01221100 will fit the 235/45R17 but not the other size. For that you would need the # TH01571225 which are a fit for your tire size 215/60R16 and are very similar to the other set.

  • Tire Chains for a 2004 Honda Element with 225/70-16 Tires
According to the owner's manual for your 2004 Honda Element, tire chains can be used as long as they are class S compliant, used on the front two wheels, and on standard size tires that came equipped on the vehicle from the manufacturer. I do have a set of tire chains that will fit your 225/70-16 tires but the Konig Standard Snow Tire Chains (Size 225) part # TH01571225 are not confirmed to fit this size tire. For a similar set of tire chains that will fit this tire size the Konig Standard...
