This permanently mounted Redarc solar system can help extend your off-grid campout if you have moderate energy demands. It provides an easy way to charge your RV batteries with clean, renewable power. Using the 180-watt solar panel, this system collects solar energy to create DC power that passes through a solar charge controller into your battery. It can extend your off-grid campout by a couple of days if you only need power for small appliances, like a coffee maker, laptop, fan, LED lights, and an energy-efficient TV.
The solar panel mounts permanently to your roof using the included corner brackets. The solar controller will monitor the battery, maintaining it and preventing it from being overcharged.
The charging process starts with the solar panel, which mounts permanently with screws or other mounting hardware (sold separately). When solar energy interacts with the silicon cells in the panel, it generates a flow of DC electrical current that charges your battery. Each of the monocrystalline cells is made from a single crystal of silicon, so the electrons that create the current have more space to move, making this panel more efficient than one with polycrystalline cells. And in optimal sunlight conditions, the panel produces 180 watts per hour.
The solar controller prevents harmful overcharging by adjusting the power generated by the solar panel before it reaches your batteries. It uses pulse width modulation technology to regulate the output through pulses that provide a consistent charge. Typically, PWM controllers are a good fit for smaller systems, rather than using more expensive MPPT solar controllers.
The controller is compatible with multiple battery types and includes preset charging profiles for sealed/gel and AGM batteries. The optional remote - sold separately - is required for flooded/wet cell and calcium batteries.
LED indicators provide information on the current solar panel output. The lights will tell you if the panel is providing a charge, if the battery is charging, and if the battery is fully charged. This will charge a battery reading at least 9V in a 12V system, or a battery bank reading 18V in a 24V system.
While this kit will work perfectly for a hands-off approach to giving your battery an extra boost, the optional Redarc Remote Monitor (RED83VR - sold separately) is an easy way to upgrade your setup. This remote would be required if you want to use this system with flooded or calcium, as it is the only way to change the solar controller's battery type.
This monitor's digital display lets you see the solar array's charging status, read your battery's voltage, check electrical usage, and other info. Since your solar charge controller is likely to be installed somewhere close to your battery bank, being able to check on your solar status from inside your RV using this remote will be far more convenient. While not necessary, this is an upgrade we highly recommend.

Hello, neighbors. It's Brad here from etrailer, and today, I'm at NATM. And this convention brings a lot of the vendors that we have at etrailer to a convention where we have their booths and their products set up. I had a chance to catch up with quite a few of 'em. So let's take a look at their products a little bit up close in, ask some of the questions to those vendors about their products. I'm here with Eric from REDARC, and REDARC's a brand that etrailer has and we all love it as far as brake controllers, but you guys extend way beyond that.
Solar's been huge. You got RVs that are solar prepped, overlanding people obviously use it. There's a lot of people that think they can power everything and be totally solar and that's not exactly the case. True, very true. So generally, you can expect four to six amps for every 100 watts of a solar panel you have.
So a hundred watt solar panel, you can expect that four to six amps, really kind of a trickle charge. If you've got the real estate on top of a large motor home, you could run as many as you want in parallel and 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, you can get up to 80 amps if you wanted to. Brad Yep. But some things to think about is it's only gonna work well on a sunny day and when you're in a situation and you're off the grid camping and you park under some trees, something like that, you're gonna be a little bit limited. So the REDARC BCDC battery chargers that have the MPPT solar controller in 'em, they are all green priority, so they're gonna pull from your solar panel first.
So, if I have a 25 amp charger and I'm currently getting five amps of solar power, I'm only gonna now take 20 amps from your alternator. So it's gonna prioritize that solar first. Solar is a great backup option, but you always want some type of DC-to-DC or shore power as your main source to make sure that under any situation, you're not gonna find yourself kinda without power, especially a five day rainstorm, something like that. You're gonna have a hard time with the solar panels. They are awesome keeping your batteries topped off when you're not using 'em, things like that, or if the trailer's in storage, things like that, that's a great use for 'em.
But yeah, you're right. You're gonna have a hard time powering everything unless you have a whole lot of real estate for solar panels. Yeah, well, and the good thing, too, is your solar panels are gonna take care of a lot of the smaller stuff to lessen the load on the rest of the bigger stuff. Exactly, exactly. Yep, yep.
