SmartPlug vs. Twist Lock

RV and boat owners have long relied on twist lock style connections for powering their rides. For years, it has been the best option for connecting to shore power. It's been reliable, but most know it's not without disadvantages:

Twist-Type Design Problems

  • Curved pins make minimal surface contact, increasing the amount of heat generated
  • Locking ring can be prone to breaking, cross threading, and stripping out
  • Faulty locking ring puts strain on the connection
  • Wear and debris can loosen the fit, further decreasing surface contact
  • Circular plug shape isn't user friendly and takes some awareness of the orientation of the pins to insert correctly

SmartPlug's connector addresses each of these concerns and does all of the heavy lifting.

Locking arms grab the inlet, a clamp inside the plug body holds the cord, the inlet cap snaps to the top while in use, and the integrated seals weatherproof the connection. This helps prevent the wiggly, dirty connections that increase electrical resistance, which creates potentially dangerous heat.

Since it uses a square plug face, SmartPlug is able to use flat pins which create far more surface contact, further reducing the risk of high heat and electrical arcing. The square shape and flat pins also make it easy to plug in - no more twisting or guessing if the pins are lined up correctly.

Video Transcript for Review of SmartPlug Marine Power - Marine Power Cord 50 Foot - SM46GJ

Hi, everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a real quick look at the SmartPlug Marine Power Cord. Now, this is going to be a great choice for you if you own a boat and you need a durable, safe, and reliable shore power connection. And this is a 50 foot long cable, and this is a 50 amp cable that's going to connect your SmartPlug-equipped boat to shore power. And the 50 amp female connector is going to snap into your SmartPlug inlet, and then the 50 amp twist style male plug is going to connect to an outlet at the marina. So the straight-in, single-step operation means no more twisting or fiddling with locking rings.

The plug shape is gonna take the guesswork out of connecting, so it's simple to use even in the dark. And the multi-point locking system is gonna remove strain from connection points. These side levers are gonna snap with audible feedback, and they're gonna keep the plug in place. The interior clamps bear the weight of the cord to prevent, to support rather, the wiring that's in the body of the cable. And the seals that you probably can see right there and the plug face around the cord are gonna keep the equipment protected from the elements.

And the flat electrical pins are gonna increase contact area compared to the curved pins and twist locks, reducing heat caused by electrical resistance. Now, this also has a blue LED light here that's going to illuminate to indicate the power is flowing. But it will flash either blue and red, or light up blue and red, or red if there's some other issues going on there. And there's a little card here that's going to walk you through those lights and what they mean. Obviously, if you have no light, that means you've got no power going through this.

But this is a very strong, very durable cable. It's constructed of premium, high-quality materials, so this is gonna hold up to extreme climates or out on the water. The marine-grade stainless steel components are gonna hold up very well for you season after season. And the nickel-plated brass electrical pins and tin wires are all going to work together to resist corrosion. The plastics are UV and heat resistant.

And then you are going to get instructions here to guide you through the proper operation. But it's a very high-quality cord that's going to serve you very well for a long time to come. And by the way, I think I failed to mention, there is going to be a very sturdy, thick piece of plastic here that's going to serve as the cap here to protect that when it's not in use. Well, that's gonna wrap up our quick look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.
