Jeff: Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this Taylor Made 17 inch long steel gas strut for boat hatches. Now this gas strut is designed to replace a worn out or damaged strut on your boat's hatch lid. It extends to ease lifting your hatch lid, and it will compress to gently close your hatch without slamming. It is a heat treated steel construction, which is very durable and it has a nice corrosion resistant coating on it, so it won't rust, even in saltwater areas. It is a ball and socket installation. This attaches to ball studs on the inside of your boat's hatch.
And the connection type is 10 millimeter ball socket. This will easily install in minutes, there's no special tools required. I want to zoom in just to show you here on the end what we're talking about. If you look at the end here, there's the socket that goes over the 10 millimeter ball and right across it on the top is a C clip. So basically what you do is just get a little flat tip screwdriver, put it under that C clip and pry it up.
You don't have to remove the clip. You can just pry it up enough to release the pressure, and then you just pop off the old one. And then when you go to put the new one on, just pry up that clip again, put that over the 10 millimeter ball, push it onto the ball, and then push that clip down, it'll lock it onto the ball stud. Now when you do install this strut, you want to install it with the inner rod here facing down, and it is recommended to replace these gas shocks in pairs. The length on it is measured from the center of one ball socket to the center of the other. So on this one, if we measure center to center, it's 17 inches length.
Compression force is 50 pounds, and this is for quantity of one strut. But that should do it for the review on this Taylor Made 17 inch long steel gas strut for boat hatches.
