LED Surface-Mount Technology

This light bar is built using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering LEDs directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability, and durability.

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And when would vibration be more likely to occur than when you are driving?

Waterproof Construction

Rampage SuperBrite LEDs

The LEDs on this light bar are suspended in clear urethane for maximum protection from the elements. This protective coating helps to fully seal each diode - and the light bar as a whole - to create a waterproof system for your truck.

Video Transcript for Installation: Rampage SuperBrite LED Tailgate Light Bar on a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Today in our 2002 Chevrolet Silverado, we're going to be taking a look at installing the Rampage SuperBrite LED Tail Light Bar, 60-inch long, part number RA960136. It's got red and white LEDs. They're going to be really bright, long-lasting, and they're very fast to activate. The red lights will come on for your stop and turn and taillight functions, while the white lights illuminate when you place your vehicle in reverse. It's fully sealed and waterproof. It's designed to be surface-mounted and have a seamless look. It fills the gap between your tailgate and bumper. That would be our taillights, left turn, right turn.

Brake light. And we'll go to reverse. To begin our installation, we're going to figure out where we're going to mount our lights. It's going to need to go in-between the tailgate and the lip of the bumper. Now you've got to keep in mind that your wires are going to go to the driver's side and that puts this little lip that's on top of the light to the top side. So we'll just place it up in there temporarily. Once we have an idea where we want to mount it, which is about half-way between.

I'm just going to put a little dot with a paint marker just so we know where we're going to be lining it up to. But we're going to take the tailgate off so we have some access room to work. Slip off our cables. We'll raise out tailgate up. Once we have our gate off, we're going to figure out what our distance is from the bottom to our mark. We'll go ahead and put a couple spots.

And we'll put one on the other side. Now, I've taken a couple of pieces of plastic with some two-sided tape on them and I'm going to apply straight where our dots going to go, to help hold it into the position we're going to need it to when we set our light in place. Now I'll take a little bit of rubbing alcohol. We want to clean the area really good where our adhesive's going to go. Go all the way over to the end and go right down to where our marks are going to be. Eliminate dirt and grime. Now we're going to peel off our tape that's on the back side. You want to make sure you center it on the truck.

We're going to lay it on those little plastic clips we put there. You have it centered up. Push it down. When we're all done, we're going to pop these strips off because we won't need those anymore. Now we're getting ready to wire it up. It's designed to plug into a 4-flat trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Or you can cut that off and you can hardwire it. Now this separate white wire is the reverse light that's going to need to be hardwired to the back of your taillight whether you plug this into a 4-flat or not if you want the reverse light option to work on your light. Bu our customer's chosen to have them all hardwired so we're going to run our wires down, take out our taillight, and we can connect them up inside there. Take our Phillips screwdriver. We'll take out these 2 screws. And grab our light. Pull it out. We'll let it hang to the side. We're going to have to go ahead and slip this from the bottom side up into the top, into the pocket here for the taillight. Now I'm just going to go ahead and cut this off so we can run our wires through there without the plug being in the way. We can just tuck them in back behind the bumper. We'll take a piece of tubing or you can use a fish wire or a piece of clothes hanger. Just put it down there so we can attach it and pull our wires back up top. Pull our wires out. And we'll just tape them to this tubing that we have here and pull them up into the pocket. Then the first wire we're going to look for is going to be for our reverse light. That's going to be our bottom bulb. I'm going to go ahead and attach this green wire. It should be the green wire. There you go. So we're going to tie into the green wire on the reverse light on our vehicle. Now it's not always going to be the same on every vehicle so you want to take your test light and double-check to make sure that's the right color for your vehicle. I went ahead and pulled the bulb out. With the power off, we're going to take a quick connect. We're going to slip our wire in there. And we'll crimp it together. Take a little bit of electrical tape. We'll just wrap it up so we can keep any dirt and moisture out of the inside of the connector. And you can reinstall that. Now that we've hooked up a reverse light, we can run it back and we'll tap into the back side of our 4-flat connector on the bottom of the vehicle. So we had to reinstall our light. And our 2 screws. And we're going to tighten those back down. Now we can go to the bottom side of the vehicle. Since we came down to our trailer plug wiring, we're going to know that the yellow, it's going to be our left side. So we'll pull out the yellow out of the harness and we're going to quick-connect into that. Put a little tape around the outside of that just to protect it. Take our green wire. It should be in here. And we'll do the same thing. Quick-connect. And we'll crimp that one down. Same thing. A little bit of tape. Take our brown wire. Place it in there. Move that one up. Now all we'll have left is our ground wire. So I'm going to go ahead and tape up our harness again to protect it from any moisture or dirt to get in there. Trying to keep cutting down on corrosion. And all we'll have left to do is put a ground. We'll take our wire. It's a thin wire so we're going to double it up. Put the back over on itself. Put on our ring connector. We'll take a self-tapping screw. We'll run it into the bottom of the body up here. Now we can secure all of our wires with zip tie. Trim off the excess. Now we can reinstall our tailgate. Place on our last strap. And we can close our tailgate. And that's going to do it for our look at the install of the Rampage SuperBrite LED Tail Light Bar, 60-inch long, part number RA960136 on our 2002 Chevrolet Silverado.
