For my 2016 jeep compass 4 wheel drive would I put snow chains on the front or back tires?

In general a 4WD vehicle performs best with tire chains on all four tires, since all four tires deliver traction. But if you only want to use one set most often they will do the most good on the rear tires.
Chains are selected based on tire size, which can be found right on the tire sidewall. If you click on the link provided you'll see how the tire size code, like 205/70-16, is indicated. Once you confirm your tire size just click on that size to see the chains that fit those tires. For instance, for the tire size 205/70-16 noted above the best option is Konig K-Summit chain # th02230k45. I also linked an article and video that will explain more on chain selection.
These premium low-profile chains do not require any internal clearance since they contact only the outside of the tires and the tread surfaces. They do not wrap around the back of the tires where they might contact critical components like brake lines. You can see how they install in the photo I linked. The European-made K-Summit chains are also the easiest ones to install and they have the best warranty - 5 years.
I checked the online owner's manual for the 2016 Jeep Compass and it states on page 414 that "Due to limited clearance, tire chains or traction devices are not recommended". The clearance referred to is within the wheel wells, near things like brake lines. The manual does not indicate anything about front or rear tires being preferred. The Konig K-Summit chains # th02230k45 will be the best option for this vehicle since they will not cause clearance issues.
If you like you can tell me your tire size and I can then give you a short list of the best options.
