Question:

I’m having an issue with this and I’m trying to isolate the issue - intermittently I cannot replicate the issue on command when I apply vehicle brakes 2002 Jeep Liberty I watch the charge on the controller build currently set at 64 but no trailer brakes apply then a few seconds delayed they grab VERY hard as if all at once Thanks

The Hopkins Impulse is a time-delay brake controller. That means that once you step on the brake pedal the controller will send back power to the brakes over a certain amount of time. With this controller there is no way to adjust that delay.

It sounds like there is a loose connection somewhere or something is off inside the controller. Check the red wire connection and make a new connection as needed. Make sure the vehicle and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside, where the wires attach, and outside on the pins.

To me it sounds like the controller is bad and needs to be replaced. I recommend going with a proportional controller such as # TK90160. It will apply the trailer brakes in proportion to how hard the vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to brake and it reduces wear and tear on the vehicle and trailer.
