Checking to See if 2010 Toyota Tundra has Factory Tow Package to Install a Brake Controller

Question:

How can I tell if my 2010 tundra has the harness for a electric brake controller? Can I use my vin number or is there a different way.

A Toyota dealer might be able to tell you if your 2010 Toyota Tundra came with the factory tow package using the VIN so you could check with them. Otherwise if the truck has a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector that is a good indication that it has the tow package.

That would mean you could then use wiring harness # 3040-P to plug in a Tekonsha brake controller such as # 90885. You can check for the factory connection point which would be located under the dash above the emergency brake pedal. I have linked a video that will help.

If your truck came with a factory 4-Way then the brake controller port may not be there. If it is then you can use 3040-P but you will need to cut the blue wire from the end that plugs into the truck and manually run a wire from it to # 37185 which will need to be installed at the back of the truck. You can use wire # 10-1-1, sold by the foot.

If the truck has the factory 4-Way but does not have the brake controller port then instead of using 3040-P and 37185 you will need to use # ETBC7 and hardwire in the controller.

If the truck does not have any trailer connector then it is unlikely it will have the brake controller port. You would need to add a 7-Way by first installing a 4-Way, # 119147KIT. then you would install # ETBC7. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.
