Removing the Spare Tire on a 2001 Nissan Xterra to Install a Trailer Hitch

In the cargo area of the 2001 Nissan Xterra, under the carpet, there are tools for accessing and changing the spare tire. One of these tools is the jack rod. On one end of the jack rod there is a T-shape. Insert that end into the oval opening located above the license plate in the middle. The rod goes in at an angle so if you are looking at the back of the vehicle the end of the jack rod you are holding will be closer to the driver's side of the vehicle.

Then you will take the wheel nut wrench from the tools and put it on the end of the jack rod. Push it in until it engages the spare tire winch which is above the spare tire. You will likely have to keep pushing toward the vehicle as you turn the handle counter-clockwise to lower the spare. Repeat the process, only turning clockwise this time, to put the tire back into place.

This process is explained in the vehicle owner's manual starting on page 6-3. If you do not have the spare tire tools then you will need to obtain them from a Nissan dealer parts department.
