Determining the Correct Weight Distribution System With 2017 Nissan Pathfinder
Products Featured in This Question
Question:
I have a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder. The towing capacity is 6,000 pounds, tongue weight capacity is 600 pounds. The camper trailer I am looking at is 4,400 pounds dry weight, 25’10” exterior length. I have a tight budget but really want a trunnion set up for clearance reasons. I know the straight line is the best of the best but what weight rating should I be looking for? Is there a more affordable option with the same sway control? Safety is the most important aspect of my purchase. Thanks

In order to choose the best weight distribution hitch, you will first need to know your total tongue weight (TW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2017 Nissan Pathfinder.
To determine TW you can use a scale such as the # e99044 or by using one of the methods outlined in the help article on determining TW I've linked for you. The ideal system would be one in which your TW would fall somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity.
Since you mentioned you have a 600 lb tongue weight capacity and a camper that is 4,400 lbs dry weight, an educated guess would put your TW somewhere in the 500 lb area, and depending on the final total there are a number of trunnion bar options. I recommend going with the Reese Strait-Line # RP66082 which is for TW between 200 lbs and 600 lbs; it will require the appropriately sized hitch ball, 2" # A-90 or 2-5/16" # C40030.
This system will provide you with a safer ride by preventing sway so long as it is rated correctly for your setup. Should you find out you have a different TW than roughly 500 lbs please let me know and I'd be happy to help find the best system for you.
I've also added links to video reviews of these products for you to take a look at.
