Easy-to-Access Brake Controller

Tekonsha POD Controls and Components

The Tekonsha POD is designed to mount in any direction, and it's especially suited for mounting on near-vertical dashes. All the controls are on the front of the module, so you can still access them with the controller tucked away in a convenient place.

Tekonsha POD review

Braking Output

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the side to change the braking output level. The output setting will appear as a number on the digital display, with a higher number indicating higher braking power.

Manual Override

The Tekonsha POD keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar lever to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you re cruising.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, with the controller designed with all of the controls on the front of the module so you can access them even if it's mounted upside down.

If your vehicle already has a plug-in brake controller wiring harness, just connect the unit to it. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to plug into. If a harness is unavailable for your vehicle, hardwiring will be necessary.

Installation Accessories

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, a 20-amp circuit breaker (sold separately) may be required for installation.

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Tekonsha POD comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the POD. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

Junction BoxBrake-Control Adapter Port

This adapter plugs into the port that is built into the electric junction box beneath your vehicle's dash. The black box is located to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet. To plug in the adapter, first remove the cover on the box. The adapter plugs into the second slot from the left, on the top row.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

2002 Chevrolet Silverado

The hitch and controller was installed on a 2002 Chevy 2500HD. It took roughly 15 min to install the Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller, plug it in and program it. As far as the B&W Turnover Ball Hitch, I cut the hole in the bed and cut the heat shield out the day before while I was waiting for the hitch to arrive. The next day my parts arrived, I laid out all the parts to make sure everything was there and then started the install. I didn't want to cut the 1"x1/2" notch out of my fender well to get the angle iron in so I spent about 15 min. trying to get it up on top the frame from underneath the truck. A waste of time. Do like the instructions say, cut the notch and slide it straight across the top of the frame. It will save time and aggravation. After getting both braces in place I ran a piece of rope down thru the hole and pulled the hitch plate up into place and tied it off. I installed all the bolts finger tight, put the side plates on and tightened everything up. It looks nice and I saved myself a $435.00 installation fee. With out a lift and without taking my rear tires off it took about 3 1/2 hrs. to install by myself. The only thing I want to say to B&W is don't place the heavy metal hitch parts on the booklet with the packets of Lithium Grease in it, they bust as the picture shows. Last but not least, thank you Sherry for all your help with my order and getting it to me quick in such short notice. I really appreciated it.

Great, and no problems

by: jim a06/09/2015

We have a Honda Ridgeline and needed this for our camper trailer. It was nice ordering the specific plug in wire for the Ridgeline and therefore eliminating hard wiring, just plugged it in. It was rough getting to the factory plug under the dash by the emergency brake petal switch. My hands are not small enough, ha ha. But success was had. Plugged into the controller and mounted it and u-wall-a. It works the way it is suppose to, I like that. A good quality unit that does what it is suppose to. thanks.

by: Michael B.03/08/2019

Very happy with this product. It fit nicely in my truck and plugged right into the factory wiring harness. Total installation time was under an hour. Easy to adjust, and works perfectly with my 5th wheel trailer. I simply pulled out the little storage cubby from the dash, cut the back off, slid the controller in, bolted it together, and stuck it all back in the dash. Looks and works great.

by: Richard03/12/2024

The quality of the adapter and customer service was very good. However, I must have ordered the wrong adapter as this on had an inline 4 plug and my controller had a square plug.

by: Tom05/21/2021

Worked out perfectly for me, super easy installation with adapter harness. Work's flawlessly, easy one hand gain control with control's on front. My truck had nice cubby it fit in so out of the way and seamless look. Thanks for a great product and service.

I sell and install a variety of components for various companies and individuals. I have zero comebacks from this company. Not that I haven't received defective parts but they always make it right. And that is good business.

by: Mike06/26/2013

I have a Toyota Tacoma (06). I had the controller installed in less than five minutes. One minute to gather the tools: drill/bits, screw driver, and tape. I thought tape would be helpful to hold the ground screw to the driver given the tight are under the dash. One minute to drill the ground hole. One minute to install the ground screw. One minute to plug in the cables and fish the wire under the stirring wheel to allow for the controller to be mounted in the storage area found on Tacoma trucks dash. I guess I was wrong. It only took four minutes. I did not need to put the tools away I was off to do other projects. I rate the product as good because I have not tried it on the trailer yet.

by: Bill G.06/04/2017

I received my purchase very quickly.
I
just installed the control and wire harness today. Installation was easy, all you need are basic hand tools and a drill with a small bit.
Haven't had chance to test it out yet but, when I do I'll update.

by: Rolando Torres07/11/2013

Easy to install in my Toyota-Tacoma 2012. I pull my Travel Trailer and this break controller worked very well and with just a little bit adjustment. Also this item was shipped very fast.

by: Patricia02/21/2024

The brake controller we purchased and had professionally installed works perfectly. We had it installed in our RV for use when towing a large vehicle trailer. It's reliable and simple. It was a great purchase!

2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Got this for my 2001 Silverado 3500. You can’t ask for anything more simple and self explanatory. Good quality harness. Been in the truck for a year now with no issues at all

by: Larry Mcb.05/22/2022

Have used the power track for a year with city and interstate travel and a 4000# single axle TT. Working flawlessly on my 20 Blazer using a bypass stoplight switch.

by: Steven K.06/05/2018

Thanks to etrailer’s video “Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee”, the installation of a Tekonsha PowerTrac controller on my 2003 Jeep was very straight forward (and I’m not a car guy!). Like in the video, I used the wiring kit (#5506). I forgot to order a pigtail wiring harness but was able to pick one up locally. Took the trailer out last weekend and the brakes worked great.

by: Caleb 02/07/2024

The controller was a great option for our 2021 forest river FSX and gave me plenty of control over the brakes. It does require a adjustment time to time but has always worked when brakes are applied. The setup and installation were a breeze and has worked for many trips.

by: David 02/09/2024

I ordered everything to install hitch an and 7 pin plug. Everything went great. Parts were all perfect and instructions easy to follow.

by: Gary12/26/2020

The Tekonsha plug-in wiring adapter fit my 99 Silverado 1500 with not any issues at the fuse block. The length of the wire harness allowed me to install the brake controller in the CD storage for easy access and use.

by: Tim B.05/10/2013

The control works great. Nice incremental application of wheel from nothing to hard on! Led light goes from green to red also in incremental degrees. Installation was a snap in my 2008 F150 with tow package. Just Plug in the control clip and the other end in the terminal above and to the right of the computer check terminal. Rather than have it below my dash I opted for the cove below the lighter. Etrailer did a nice job of getting out to me right away and kept me informed where this was at all the way to my door. Good Job!

by: JM07/04/2016

Product arrived quickly and installed very easily. Plug and play with the correct adapter (3035-P Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Ford, Lincoln, Mercury) for a 2001 Ford F-150. Controller is very easy to set the braking on your trailer.

by: Jon W.05/15/2017

I ordered the powertrac with the 22292, 2011 ford F150 wiring adapter, It works great. 15 mins, and I had everything ready to go. It is a little sensitive to adjust but ones you get the feel for it, it takes no time to adjust. very happy with this unit, I would recommend this unit to everyone.

by: Rick08/25/2018

Installed on 2003 Toyota Tundra with the factory tow package. Installation was a breeze with the included vehicle specific wiring adapter. It took me about 45 minutes total. Looks professionally installed. Easy to use. Set the adjustment for your specific trailer and go!

by: Adam 02/21/2024

A customer service Representative by the name of Rob checked into my order when it did not show up on the estimated date then called me when it got here to let me know it was delivered. Great courteous service and the components worked and installed in a breeze.

by: Charles 07/30/2023

Because my truck has the factory tow option, I was able to purchase this custom harness from etrailer for a very quick install. No wires to trace…. No splices…. Very simple. One end of the harness plugged in to a socket under the dash of my truck. The other end of the harness plugged into a socket on the back of the Teconsha P3. Wiring complete!!

by: Greg 03/10/2024

Was delivered earlier than anticipated. Had to move one wire to make it compatible with my year truck but not a big deal. Highly recommend Etrailer.com for all your trailer needs.

by: Douglas03/04/2024

This made the installation very easy, it was plug and play with this.

by: Arthur01/15/2023

Actually, I haven’t used it. I have an original Tekonsha that I have used for about 16 years with 3 previous cars and trailers and it is still working fine. It gives me much more information about the operation of the trailer brakes than the model I purchased from you. Since that controller is very old and yours was not very expensive, I decided to keep it as an emergency spare. Thanks for Checking,

  • Which Plug-In Adapter To Install Draw-Tite I-Command In 2002 GMC Sierra
  • The Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - GM # 3025-P is the correct adapter to install your Brake EVN # TK63VR in your 2002 GMC Sierra. This harness will plug into the factory fuse box underneath the dash as shown in the included picture, and then directly into your trailer brake controller so there is no splicing for the install. The # 3015-P you mentioned is for select GM trucks and SUVs made after 2003. You will want to use all of the factory fuses

  • Which Tekonsha Brake Controller Install Harness for 2005 GMC Sierra
  • The # 3015-P and the # 3025-P are both very similar but for your 2005 GMC Sierra you SHOULD be using the 3015-P but since the difference is really just a wiring switch on the same connector it is possible yours may have already had that switch done. But at the end of the day if your controller is working fine with whichever harness I would just run that and not worry.

  • There are a couple of connections that need to be made under the hood of your 2000 Chevy Silverado in order to make the brake controller and 7-Way trailer connector functional. I have included a link to our FAQ article that explains how to make the connections and I will also outline them here. Under the hood, you will need to remove the rearward bracket in the corner closest to the driver. You will then remove the upper and lower covers of the accessory fuse block. Next to the fuse

  • Can Factory Brake Controller of 2007 GMC Sierra 2500HD be Bypassed without Dash Codes
  • If you bypass the factory brake controller in your 2007 GMC Sierra 2500HD properly you would not have any error codes appear on the dash display. You also would not have to have the computer of the truck reprogrammed in any way which means you don't have to make a special trip to a dealer. To see exactly how to do this check out the help article I linked on this page. It will walk you through the entire process. It's basically a few wiring connections that need to be made under the dash

  • Screen on Prodigy Brake Controller Goes Blank When Braking a 2002 Chevy Suburban
  • A blank display when engaging the manual or vehicle brake usually indicates that you are losing power on either the power or ground wire for the brake controller. Did you use the # 3025-P plug-in brake control wiring adapter when you installed the unit on your 2002 Suburban? If so, I would first make sure the connections are firmly seated--push together until you hear the click. You can also check the wire itself to make sure there are no pinched or exposed points that might be touching

  • How to Move a Brake Controller from a 2004 Chevy Silverado to a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado
  • Brake controllers are not vehicle specific so the controller in your 2004 Chevy will work in the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado with towing package, but the wiring for the 2004 vehicle will not work on the 2011 Chevrolet truck. Starting with the 2007 new body style trucks Chevrolet stopped using a connection port for brake controller installation and started leaving a bundle of blunt cut wires above your left shin as you are seated in the driver seat. The wires can be identified by a white

  • Tekonsha Brake Controller Harness for 1999 Chevy Suburban and 2002 Ford E-450 RV
  • The reason you cannot find a connector for the 1999 Suburban is because the 1999 Suburban did not have a tow package that included a brake controller port. If the RV builder bought the Econoline from Ford with a factory installed 7-Way or 4-Way, you would use Tekonsha Brake Control Harness part # 3035-P. The RV builder may have ordered the van without these or removed them when it converted the van to an RV. The port should be located either behind the panel, underneath and to the right

  • Installing a Brake Controller on a 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 with Factory 7-Way Trailer Connector
  • Since your 2001 GMC Sierra came with a factory installed 7-way trailer connector, GM should have already completed the connections under the hood at the fuse box. However, we have found that GM did not complete the wiring on all trucks, even if they came with the factory trailer wiring. If you plug in your brake controller using a plug-in style wiring harness, like part # 3025-P for Tekonsha brake controllers, and the brake controller does not power on, then the wiring under the hood

  • Brake Controller Stoplight Switch Circuit of 2001 GMC Sierra 2500 Not Working
  • This is a pretty common issue for GM trucks around the age of yours. It's the third brake light fuse of your 2001 GMC Sierra 2500 that is blown. When it goes the brake controller activation circuit stops working as well. You can test this really easily by pressing the brake and seeing if the third brake lights up on cab above truck bed.
