Today, on our 2013 Ford Escape, we're going to be test fitting the Rhino-Rack Roof Rack System, consisting of part numbers: RRVA137B-2, these are the Vortex Aero Crossbars, 54" long; part number: RRRLKVA, this is the 2500 Series legs for the Vortex Aero Crossbars; and part number: DK375, and this is the Custom Fit Kit for the Ford Escape. The Rhino-Rack Roof Rack System is great for carrying a wide variety of accessories on your roof, while freeing up space inside your vehicle. This can carry bike racks, cargo baskets, cargo boxes, ski and snowboard carriers, and even kayak carriers. The elliptical shape of the bars, combined with the Vortex Aero strips on top, is going to cut down wind noise and drag while you drive. If we open up our endcap here, with our included tool, you can see it also can receive T-slot accessories, such as bike racks or other items. Each of the legs on our roof rack system come with a lock installed on them, so once you install this to your vehicle, it's going to be secured to the roof of your vehicle, as well. Finally, these bars have a carrying capacity of 165 lbs, although you always want to double check with your vehicle's manual to make sure it can withstand those weights. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the roof rack system, let's go ahead and show you how it installs.
We already have our front bar installed, and how we did that, after all the assembly was done, we put it into place, and then we measured back from the center of the doorjamb here back to this area here. Let's go ahead and show you how the rear bar goes together. We already have our one side put together. So what we'll do is, we will flip our bar upside down, then we'll take our leg here, making sure that the top portion here is loose up, so we can slide that into our T-track, at the bottom of our crossbar. So we'll slide that on, like so. Now in the instructions, they will give you a specific measurement measure from this area back and then we'll have the strip that you'll put in that place, cut it to length, and that's where it's going to stay.
But, for demonstration purposes, we'll go ahead and just measure it out, according to the instructions, bring our leg in, then use our included tool and tighten that leg down. Next, we'll take our foot pads here, and these are going to go on the bottoms of our leg, so make sure you have the proper one for the proper leg. Push that into place, and you want to make sure that the arrow is facing in the right direction. See, since we had this upside down, when we flip it up, this portion is going to be facing towards the front of the vehicle. Now, our next step is we're going to take our clamp and place that at the end, here. Of course, we have to loosen up the screw here.
Then, we'll line up our holes and just loosely, just loosely, install the bolt. Our final step, before we place this onto the roof, is we're going to install our endcap here. We just push that into place, swit, just like that. You got to make that sound when we do it. We'll take our locking mechanism here, that does come with it, turn it like that, and now it's secure into place. Let's go ahead and set this on our roof.
In setting this in place, just be very careful, because you don't want your clamp to hit the top of your vehicle. So we'll set the driver's side down first, then gently set down our passenger side. Our next step is to refer to the instructions, and again, get that center-to-center bar measurement for our crossbar spread. We get this measured out, and we'll be sure to do this on both sides. Our next step is to start tightening down our clamps to our vehicle. We'll first get it snug, up against the door frame here. Again, take our tightening tool and just get it snug. Once we have it snug on both sides, then we'll start giving it about five or six turns, each side. How you know this is going to actually be completely tightened down, you can see at the end here of our tool, there's a curve to it. As we turn this here, when it's completely tightened and torqued, it's going to straighten out, like you see there. Now we know it's torqued down, and we don't have to do anymore turns. Now we can get our locking endcaps and put those into place. There you have it for our Rhino-Rack Roof Rack System on our 2013 Ford Escape.

These heavy-duty, aluminum crossbars work with Rhino-Rack legs to create a sturdy roof rack. The square bars include built-in C-channels for mounting Rhino-Rack heavy-duty, contractor-grade accessories.I’ve had this rhino rack for over 3 years and it’s been excellent on long road trips to the ski slopes. A year after my purchase, I realized that I was missing the plastic coverings that attached to the end of the bars and called their customer service to resolve the missing pieces. I was impressed with their quick response and seamless delivery.
The rack fit well and was easy to install. Seems to be made well. The problem is the amount of road noise. I never even put the basket on. It was so loud, it roared. I repositioned it several times but the noise was way too much and I finally just removed it. I spent a lot of money for the rack and the basket and now they are in storage. I wish it would have worked out better because I thought it looked really good.
This has been a disaster, and terrible experience from the start. Original product Rhino roof rack ($188.00) misrepresented for sale, even called and was told all parts were included as "Open Box" item. Received item with missing parts and mismatched parts, then ET sent wrong parts (Legs) causing having to order these cross bars ($192.00) to fit parts sent (Legs). Now my $300.00 BougeRV ski rack - mounting base plates won't fit the crossbars. Still waiting for return label for original item so I can get my refund of $188.00. Three weeks later, still dealing with problem. I do appreciate Shawnee and EDW for their efforts in follow up service attempts.
Great product, fit was spot on with correct vehicle specific parts. Etrailer
was fantastic to work with. Great communication and feedback, worked through a small problem with positive outcome. Will definitely purchase from them again, their customer service department is top notch.
Ordered a Rhino Rack for my 2014 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali. Rack arrived in very good shape and all items were there. Installing at this time and see no problems ahead.
Tricky to rivet tracks onto car with a manual riveter but once done, a great solution for the car with ease of bar removal. My only regret was going with the square bars which result in notable increase in wind noise.
High-quality, sturdy rails, but noisy. There was a pronounced and audible whistle driving with these racks at any common road or highway speed (with the rubber inserts installed across the top). I have since replaced these rails with the Rhino vortex aero style (change of vehicles and the HD bars did not fit the new car). Having used both types several times, I would recommend the aero style over the HD if you have the option.
Product installation instructions were fair, and that is the worst thing I have to say. I havent put anything on the rack yet as I just installed it, but I gave a good tug on the bars and they are SOLID. The product came in a reasonable amount of time, and the feedback for etrailer is that I got followup emails at each step of the process keeping me fully informed right up to the message asking for feedback.
Bottomline: etrailer is a great business to work with, and this product seems to be good too.
Good quality and locks are included. The plastic lock covers are flimsy but they will keep an honest person honest.
2016 Ford Escape Naked Roof... Easy to put together, easy to put on. Haven't actually used them yet, but the weekend is coming. They got here quickly and with no problems. (the J carriers are from some place else)
Can't really comment on the bars because they didn't arrive but the legs got here. Called Justin and he is getting them shipped, just wondering why it takes so long to get here. Picked on 8/12 and delivery is set for 8/23.
I installed this by myself. It was very easy . Sometimes I found the instructions vague but the online installation video helped me when I wasn’t understanding what to do. I would recommend this product to my friends for sure. It looks great on my Escape. Loading up the SUP Boards in the morning. Can’t wait.
Very pleased with my purchase. The videos made it really easy to put together and install.
Very happy with this product at the one year mark. No slippage or loose hardware. I wanted a wide flat rack for hauling kayaks and/or bikes and this product gave me enough real estate for both at a far more modest price than other brands.
I'm thinking of replacing the curved and narrow factory rack on my other vehicle with a Rhino as well.
Rhino rack with kayak rack for Ford Escape. Easy install very sturdy. Kayak attachments fold down when not in use. Etrailer delivered!
This kit is easy to slap on and sturdy enough to balance my skis and snowboards. I recently used the Rhino Rack on a three hour drive to a ski resort and had no issues.
As always from etrailer.com, a great product at a reasonable price. Customer service help was not necessary in this case to choose the best product for my vehicle and needs, but has been a painless process for other needs in the past. Etrailer.com is my go-to for aftermarket cargo hardware needs.
As always, however, the manufacturer (not etrailer.com) provides marginal instructions. In spite of that, initial assembly and installation on my wife's 2016 Escape took about an hour, and it looks like the rack will do a great job for us on family trips. I anticipate removal or reinstall Atkin in the future to take less than 15 minutes for one person.
The Rhino roof racks with accompanying legs, pads and clamp kit are well designed for both fit and finish. The instructions are clear and precise and follow in a logical sequence! I would definitely recommend these roof racks for transporting kayaks , bicycles and other loads within the weight capacity stated!
This did everything that was promised. The rack held tight over 600 miles of road, at least half of which was in wind and rains. The instructions were very clear, and the only difficulty in getting the racks on the roof is that we were having 2 days of heavy rain and winds. Otherwise, it was a snap. The only issue I had was the rubber caps that go over the screw which hold the leg onto the bar itself. There is insufficient space for the rubber cap to slide through the bar. I can't see why the cap is necessary anyway, as the screw is not exposed to the elements at all
This rack works perfectly on my Nissan Versa for carrying my two Perception Sound 9'6" kayaks. The Rhino-Racks look good to me. The kayaks can rest directly on the rubber pads on the rails, unlike the Yakama racks I had in the past that had bare pipe rails. Also, I expect I can buy parts to adapt this product to a different car without having to buy new towers. I am sorry there are not hooks or loops to attach bungees when carrying lumber. They are noisy in the wind, but less so when carrying the kayaks.
This is my second Rhino-Rack. They go on very easily and hold the bikes/kayaks and even an extension ladder very well....thanks for a great product
I used this rack to mount two 65lbs kayaks to my vehicle and travel. One of many trips was over a thousand miles (round trip) and they moved maybe half a centimeter a piece during. I was extremely pleased with how easily I could adjust them. The original shipment had everything that was supposed to be in it and the directions were realitively clear. I had them together and on in roughly an hour. When they are off the roof the only issue I have arises. The rubber feet that sit directly on the roof tend to fall off easily. Not a big deal.
Two items I received surprised me when I unpacked the box were the rails because they were not black like I saw in the picture, and the rubber insert that I am having a hard time sliding in the rail. Should this rubber insert have come already installed in the rail or is there a top on how to put in with ease?
The web site was easy to understand and easy to navigate for ordering all of the right parts for our truck. When all of the items arrived (on time), everything fit perfectly and was easy to install. Plus the price was better then other sites we visited and all of the items we ordered were in stock at the time. We would have no hesitation about ordering from etrailer.com again.
These work great. I’ve had an 80lbs 32ft extension ladder strapped down going 80mph on the highway and it was held in place.
