Video Transcript for Detailed Breakdown of the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball

Today we're going to be taking a look at Part Number A-6, this is the CURT two and five-sixteenth inch trailer hitch ball. A few measurements to go over with you real quick. This hitch ball is going to give us a shank diameter of an inch and a quarter, it's going to give us a shank length measuring from the bottom of the platform to the end of the threads of two and five-eighths of an inch. This is designed to fit draw bar thicknesses of a half inch to one inch thick. The hitch ball is going to offer a capacity of ten thousand pounds. It's made from a solid steel construction with a nice chrome finish on it, so it is going to stand up really well against rusting and corrosion. Here on the sides of the platform, it's going to have the flats, these are just your wench flats, makes for an easier installation, you can get your wrench around there for a nice, adequate grip.

Really going to come in handy when you need to torque this down. The hitch ball will need to be torqued to specifications listed by the manufacturer. You can find all that information on the tag that's going to come attached to the trailer hitch ball. You just want to make sure that you remove this tag before your installation. Really simple installation though. The hitch ball is going to go straight through that opening on your ball mount.

You're going to place on the lock washer as well as the nut, and then you're going to get everything tightened down, and again once you get it hand tight, or once you get it tight with a wrench, you will need to go ahead and torque it down to the specifications listed by the manufacturer. It looks like for this particular mount, it says to tighten the trailer ball to four hundred and fifty foot pounds of torque. That's going to do it for our review of Part Number A-6, this is the CURT two and five-sixteenth inch trailer hitch ball. .

  • Trailer Hitch Ball Wrench Size and Torque Rating for 1-1/4 Inch Hitch Ball Shank Size
You can have a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball on either a 1 inch or 1-1/4 inch shank. The nut on a hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch shank takes a wrench with a 1-7/8 inch socket. A hitch ball with a 1 inch shank will take a wrench with a 1-1/2 inch socket. You will need to torque all hitch balls with a 1-1/4 inch shank, like 2-51/6 inch hitch ball # A-6, down to 450 ft/lbs. I am including a link to some helpful trailer hitch ball information, if needed.

  • Is 2 Inch Hitch Ball Okay to Use With 2-5/16 Inch Coupler
While I can sympathize with your issue, it is not safe to tow a trailer if you only have a 2" hitch ball and your trailer coupler is designed for a 2-5/16" hitch ball, even for a short distance; the insecure connection between hitch ball and coupler would pose a danger to others because of the risk of the trailer becoming uncoupled from the tow vehicle. The correct 2-5/16" hitch ball will depend on the shank diameter you need as well as capacity. Your ball mount will have a hole where...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for 2015 Shasta Reissue Airflyte 19
The weight distribution system I recommend for your trailer and Cadillac Escalade is the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control - Trunnion Bar - 10,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW # RP66082. The vintage style of your trailer is more prone to crosswinds and passing vehicles so this system is the best for actively working to prevent sway. You will also need the hitch ball # A-6 for a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball or # A-90 for a 2 inch hitch ball. The Husky # HT32217 is too big a system...

  • Best Weight Distribution System to Use when Testing Out Multiple Travel Trailers
Since there is going to be a variety of trailers, getting something that will fit all of the applications is difficult. Don't worry, though. We have you covered. The best one for you is going to be the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System, part # FA92-00-0800. This one can support tongue weights from 400 - 800 pounds. Going up to 800 pounds is important because once you load the trailer of those 600-pound tongue weight ones, the tongue weight will go up. You may even be able to load that...

  • Difference Between Friction Sway Bar and Weight Distribution System with Sway Control
It sounds like you are deciding between a standalone anti-sway friction bar like the Reese # 83660 and a complete weight distribution system like the Reese Strait-Line # RP66084 that features integrated sway control for your Silverado and Keystone trailer. A friction sway bar will do a nice job of fighting sway once it has begun but a complete weight distribution system that uses tension bars for sway control will provide even more overall improvement, along with equalizing the load on...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for Aliner Classic Camping Trailer
For the weight capacity, you do not technically need a weight distribution system. However, due to the design of the trailer, I do recommend using a weight distribution system for the sway control features as the crosswinds or passing vehicles may create more sway than would be comfortable. For your 2015 Honda Odyssey, I recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control # RP66082 for your application because it will be a fit for your trailer tongue weight and any additional...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System For A V-Nose Trailer
The brackets welded to the frame appear to be standard hangers for a chain-style weight distribution hitch. Since the brackets are 30" back from the ball, I recommend using the Reese Weight Distribution System # RP67509. This requires the brackets to be placed exactly 30" back from the ball so it will match up nicely. Instead of using the brackets included with the hitch, you will simply slip the chain link into the welded bracket. The Reese Weight Distribution System # RP67509 is intended...

  • Choosing Correct Curt Weight Distribution System for Trailer with GVWR of 6,243 Pounds
You upgraded your weight distribution from the Curt short-arm system, part # C17322, to the Curt TruTrack, part # C17500, which is much better system but it's still rated too high most likely. It all depends on the loaded trailer's tongue weight. Both of those systems are rated for 800 to 1,000 pounds of tongue weight. So you want the tongue weight of your loaded trailer added to the amount of weight you add behind the rear axle of your two vehicle to be between 800 and 1,000 pounds....

  • Best Way to Reduce Suspension Sag When Towing a Trailer
We have the perfect product for you, but it's not a suspension enhancement system as they are more ideal for vehicles that are carrying weight in the cargo area of the vehicle. For a towing situation a weight distribution system would be much better as it actually distributes the tongue weight of the trailer up to the front axle of the tow vehicle which will help with braking and handling. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight...

The Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System part # C17499 is a good option for this with built-in sway control. The Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control - Trunnion - 8,000 lbs GTW, 800 lbs TW # C17499 will allow a rise of up to 6-1/2 inches so it will work well for you. The shank will need to be inverted for the rise position and you will put the hardware in the 3rd and 5th holes from the top when inverted. The key to choosing a weight distribution (WD) system is to know your trailer's actual fully-loaded tongue weight (TW) just as it will be when you head out. To this you need to add the weight of anything in the truck bed that sits behind the rear axle, such as a loaded cooler. Since you noted this is not usually the case with your truck then the actual measured TW of the fully-loaded trailer will give you the information you need. TW matters when choosing a WD system because you want to...
