Pop and Lock Vehicle Locks - Tailgate Lock - PL54FR Review

Ellen: Hey everyone. I'm Ellen here at and we are going to be taking a look at the Pop & Lock tailgate custom lock. This is an add-on to your vehicle to be able to actually lock your tailgate, which is very handy if you have a tonneau cover or a camper shell, and you have gear loaded in there and you want to keep it safe and secure. The nice thing about it is that we can use our factory locks, our powered locks to operate that tailgate lock and tip the key fob, get it unlocked, or lock it up with that, so whatever we're hitting the button to lock all our doors, it's also going to lock that tailgate. So it makes it really easy to just integrate into what you already have. If you don't already have powered locks, there is a switch kit to add that function into your vehicle that is sold separately here at if you want to check that out, it is on the product page.

As far as what comes in the kit; it's everything that you see laid out here, this does fit the 2016 through the current Toyota Tacoma, as well as the 2007 through the current Toyota Tundra. So it should be an easy install for those vehicles, so let's take a closer look at what we get here. This is actually going to be the locking mechanism itself. So this is going to go in behind your tailgate lock handle or your tailgate handle and provide that locking function. We also have a fuse harness to wire in and make sure that everything is going to be fuse protected.

There's a shorter length of wire to go on the end with our lock on our tailgate, and then a longer end to go into our factory wiring. The reason for that being split is so that you can take off your tailgate, remove it for any kind of longer gear or replace it and put it back on there. So instead of having to cut the wire and then reconnect everything, it's just a matter of taking apart this little plug. So it makes it pretty easy to do that. We also get a nice handful of zip ties to cinch everything up, make sure that that wiring isn't hanging down, keep it all bundled nice and tight so we don't have any stray wires. Get a couple of quick splices, the mounting bolt for the unit, and then a couple of grommets.

These help the factory wiring, and also the new wiring that we're putting in there; pass through the frame of your vehicle. There's going to be a spot where it kind of crosses that gap between the bumper and the rest of your truck. So this helps that wire to pass through without going over any kind of sharp edges. So there's a little slot for the factory wiring that's already present. And then this smaller area where we're going to be placing in our new wiring. You get two of those, so you kind of need one for either side and that's pretty much it.

So there's no cutting or splicing or excuse me, there's no drilling required with this. You do have to cut and splice into your factory wiring a little bit just to get to those; on-off functions into your factory connection, but no drilling, no welding required to get this installed. Fairly straightforward, the instructions are pretty well laid out as far as what you're going to need for the install. Mostly it's just going to be tools to get into the back of your tailgate handle and get access to all that. It is covered by a one-year warranty and should make a nice addition to your truck to keep everything secure. Well, I hope this has been helpful in deciding if this is going to be the right kit for you, again I'm Ellen here at Thanks for watching.
