Review of Demco RV Fifth Wheel DM8550043

Today we're going to take a look at the Demco Recon Single Jaw 5th Wheel trailer hitch with a 21,000 pound weight capacity. Now this 5th wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so you can tow your 5th wheel trailer. It uses a nice wraparound single piece jaw that'll provide a secure connection. It gives you 360-degree jaw-to-king-pin contact. That'll give you less rattle, more security, than the slide bar jaws. If you notice in front right up here, there's a 3/4-inch thick solid steel locking bar, which will reinforce the connection of your coupling trailer, and that'll automatically lock into place when the jaw closes. It does use a double pivot hitch head, which will ease hookup, helps limit chucking.

Pivots front to back and side to side. Now you can set the hitch height settings. There's three different hitch height settings to fit your application. It's critical because when you go to tow your fifth wheel trailer, you want it to be as level as possible with your tow vehicle. To set the hitch height settings, there's three settings.

The lowest is 15-1/2, next one will be 17-1/4, and then 18 inches. The way you set that, and one thing on hitch height, it's always measured from the truck bed to the top of the hitch head. If you hold the pin over here, pull the clip, and then pull this large pin out, that'll let this yolk. There's three different holes that you can set it in. You can set it for those three different settings.

Very easy to change your hitch height setting. Also, on side here, right underneath the yolk, you'll see this blue area, and there's one over here. Those are polyurethane or cushion polyurethane dampeners to help reduce noise and absorb any road shock. Now the handle for the jaw is right here. It is a spring-loaded handle. It has a nice comfort grip on it.

It allows for simple coupling. The safety pin right here that keeps it into place is tethered, so when you do remove it, you can see, you won't lose it. It'll hang right there. Lets you secure the handle in the open or the closed position. Right now we're in the closed position. We'll just lock it into place. I am going to demonstrate this later to show you how it all works. Now this is made of a sturdy steel construction. It has a nice rust resistant black powder coat finish to it. It is a lightweight two piece design. It makes installation and removal quick and easy. There's a large pin right here, that if you pull this out, you can take the head out of the yolk, and then take the yolk out. It's very simple for one person to remove everything. Now to install this, it's a very simple installation. You do need base rails and an installation kit. We do sell those separately on our website. I would recommend to use our Fit Guide and put in your year and model vehicle and it'll show you which base rails and installation kit you need. Now for this video demonstration, I just have it set demonstrated on a set of rails to give you an idea of what this would look like installed. Now this will fit. This is compatible. This space is compatible with B&W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley above-bed base rails. Now there is one note, it cannot be used with rails that are part of a gooseneck adapter plate. Meaning the base rails must be securely bolted to your truck to be able to use this. This part is made in the USA. A few specs of it. The gross towing weight capacity is 21,000 pounds. Vertical load limit, or pin weight capacity, is 5,250 pounds. Then just to mention, those hitch height settings again, is 15-1/2 inches, 17-1/4 inches, and 18 inches. What I'm going to do now is demonstrate, I'm going to grab this replica of a king-pin. This is what the king-pin would look like on your 5th wheel. I just want to show you how the jaws would work. Again, we'll unclip the pin and clip. Then if you just pull your handle out, you'll notice it automatically locks into place, and you'll see the jaws are open ready to go. When you go to back up and couple up, your king-pin will slide right in here to the jaws. You can see, once it gets in far enough, it will automatically, the single jaw will completely wrap around. You'll notice this locking bar right up here. It locks into place, or keeps it from coming out. Then your handle, the hole will line up. You just take your pin and clip, drop it right into the hole, lock it, and now the handle won't move. You're all ready to tow. Simple as that. That should do it for the review on the Demco Recon Single Jaw 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with a 21,000 pound weight capacity.
