Review of Curt Fifth Wheel C16034

Today we're going to take a look at the CURT A20 Dual Jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch with the Ford OEM legs, and a 20,000 lb weight capacity. This is a custom-fit part. It is designed to fit the 2011 and newer Ford Super Duty trucks with the factory installed towing prep package. Anytime on a custom-fit part, I always recommend to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show if this will work for your application. This fifth wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so that you can tow your fifth wheel trailer. It uses in interlocking two-jaw system right here, which will provide a nice 360 degree jaw to kingpin contact.

Because of that, it'll give you less rattle, more security than your slide bar models. Also in the very front of the jaws, if you look closely, there'll be two built-in greased inaudible 00:00:44 fittings. That gives you easy lubrication of the jaws. The head itself is a fully articulating torsion head. It gives you controlled coupling and a nice stable, quiet ride. It'll self-align for easy hookup, help suppress any road shock which will help suppress the bothersome towing noise.

The handle right over here is a lockable handle, lets you easily secure the trailer to your hitch. It comes with a pinning clip to lock it into place. They do have the hole that's large enough, you could actually, for extra security, put a padlock in there if you prefer. We do sell the padlock separately. The handle's a short throw, single handle operation. Also on this, let me just rotate it.

I'm going to show you when you install the hitch head to the legs themselves, there's three rows of holes. Depending on where you put it, it'll give you a four inch hitch height adjustment. The hitch height will be measured from your truck bed to the top of your hitch head. You'll want to make sure you have that correct, because you'll want your fifth wheel to be as level as possible with your tow vehicle. Depending what row of holes you put it on, it'll give you a four inch height adjustment, anywhere from 13 inches to 17 inches of hitch height adjustment. Also one of the main features on this hitch is the three point indicator system.

It uses color coding. Let me just rotate this so you can get a better view of it. It's on the back here. If you can see right under the head right here, there's the different colors, red, green, and yellow. Basically this is color coded. It'll tell you if your hitch is ready to couple, uncouple, or tow. What's nice is this is visible from the cab. If you're right here sitting in the cab, you can look back here when you're trying to couple or uncouple. Basically, right now it's showing green which means the jaws are completely closed. If there was a kingpin in here, it'd be closed around the kingpin, that means it's locked closed and you're safe to tow. If you open it, let me just open it with the handle here. We'll pull the pin and clip. Again, this handle, you just move it back and you can see now the jaws are open and it's showing yellow. Yellow means your jaws are ready to couple so you're safe to back the truck in to couple it up to your fifth wheel. By chance, if it shows the red, that means it's uncoupled, that means the jaws are locked open, it's safe for you to pull the truck away, but do not couple. Just by turning around in your cab and looking back here at these colors, it shows you what position those jaws are in. Right here, it has a nice, fast one pin head removal, which will make it easy for one person to remove this hitch. You pop the clip on the other side, pull this large pin out, and you can take that head right out of the cross member. It makes it a lot lighter and easier for one person to remove the hitch. Let me just rotate this back around. There we go. It will include this plastic lube plate. This lube plate goes onto your kingpin, helps it glide smoothly into the hitch during hookup. This is a fast and easy installation. It'll drop right into the four receiver pucks that are built into your Ford factory under bed rails. All you have to do to install that, rotate a little bit again just so you can see . You can see these handles. There's one on each corner. You can just pop your pin and clip out of here, rotate your handles out a quarter of a turn. When you do that, it'll rotate those tabs. Now it lines those tabs up and you'll do it on the other side also. That way you're able to drop it right into those pucks. Once they drop all the way in, push your handles back in a quarter of a turn, that'll rotate the tabs to lock it into those pucks, and then your fifth wheel's all ready to go. Just put your pin through the holes, lock it into place, now it's fast and easy, just like that. This is a nice, sturdy steel construction. It has a nice, durable carbide powder coat finish. A few specs on this, the gross towing weight capacity, again, is 20,000 lbs. Vertical load limit or pin weight capacity is 5,000 lbs. The hitch height we had mentioned is anywhere from 13 inches to 17 inches. The last thing I want to show you is here's an example of what the kingpin would look like on your fifth wheel. I just want to show you how the jaws will work. Right now, we left it in the open position. It's showing yellow, which means you're ready to couple. If the kingpin will slide back into the dual jaws, you can see when it gets back far enough, the jaws completely surround the kingpin 360 degrees. The handle moves up into the locked position. All you have to do is take your pin and clip, drop it right into the hole, clip it, and then the handle won't move and you're all locked, ready to go. Again, if you look at your color back here, it's showing green, which means green, your jaws are locked closed. It's safe to tow. That should do it for the review on the CURT A20 Dual Jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch, with the Ford OEM legs and a 20,000 lb weight capacity.
