Weight Distribution Recommendation for a Trailer with 800lb Tongue Weight and Best Sway Control
Published 11/25/2014 >
Question:
I would greatly appreciate your help and expertise in choosing a weight distribution hitch with sway control. Your FAQ sheet was very helpful in describing the various types of hitches. I tow a Lance 2014 Model 2385 travel trailer GVW=6700, estimated tongue weight = 800 lbs, 28 ft long with a 2012 F-150, Ecoboost. The F-150 is equipped with after-market air suspension booster air bags on the rear. The trailer tows very well and with very little sway, but there is no sway control except for the factory system that is on the F-150. My hitch is a Husky Model 31280 round-bar weight distributing hitch with a 2 5/16 ball. I would like to incorporate a sway capability, but do not like the Independent Friction Sway Control, as it operates all the time in both directions and needs to be removed when backing. Therefore, I would appreciate your comments on the best system to use, either as an addition to my existing WDH or a replacement, taking into consideration the effectiveness of the weight distribution and the sway control and the ease of hook-up and unhooking. It appears that I could go with a Blue Ox ratcheting latch brackets, but it is difficult to understand how much this actually helps with sway control. I have looked at the Anderson WDH/sway control system, but some reviews have indicated that this system is not terribly effective with sway control and probably works best with a lighter, smaller trailer. Thoughts/comments are appreciated. Thanks.

The weight distribution systems we offer that have the best sway control are the Strait Line systems. They have the only sway control that actively works to prevent sway before it starts.
For a Strait Line system confirmed to work with your 800 lbs of tongue weight I would recommend the part # RP66084. This system also allows for reversing of the trailer with the system connected. Check out the review video I attached for more information.
When setting up a WD system on a vehicle with factory air bags that work to auto-level the vehicle when loaded you will want to first hook the trailer up and let the air system do it's thing and once it is settled begin setting up the WD system.
I attached a link to the WD FAQ you referenced to the right as well.
