Can You Back Up a Trailer When Using Weight Distribution

Updated 08/27/2014 | Published 08/26/2014

Question:

Hi, I am new to the RV trailer scenario but have pulled tandem car trailers for quite a few years and am also a retired OTR long distance trucker. On my question Ive heard both Yes and No through-out the rumour mill ? When using a WDH set-up can you leave it hooked up when backing into a parking spot or do you un-hook the unit ? I listened to one gent talking on the CB stating:Never back up your P/U and RV trailer trailer while the WDH is in place ? ? ? Again, may I repeat I have absolutely no experience with WDH units. I will be using a RAM 1500 pulling a 22-24 ft Ultra Light tandem RV trailer, Any info appreciated.

There is definitely a gray area when it comes to backing up with weight distribution installed. Basically, if you have to back up the trailer in a sharp enough angle you would want to disconnect the system first. But if you are backing straight back or just a slight angle then it wouldn't be a problem.

On systems that have friction sway control such as # 83660 you would want to disengage the sway control bar portion anytime you are backing up so you don't bend that bar.

A good rule to go by is when in doubt, take them out (they being the spring bars in the system). I have included a link to the right that covers weight distribution and sway control for you that should be helpful.
