Is the GSI Outdoors Pinnacle Radiant Butane Stove Good for Cooking in Windy Conditions?

Published 11/04/2026

Question:

I do a lot of weekend camping in the mountains, and one thing that drives me crazy is trying to cook breakfast when the wind picks up. My current butane stove struggles to keep a steady flame, and Ive had mornings where it takes forever just to get a skillet hot. I came across the GSI Outdoors Pinnacle Radiant Butane Stove and noticed it has a ceramic burner and some kind of wind protection built in. Does that actually help when cooking outside, or am I still going to need to find a spot completely out of the wind?

Hey Kevin! Yes, the GSI Outdoors Pinnacle Radiant Butane Camping Stove # GSI34XB is designed to handle a little wind better than a traditional exposed burner, thanks to its built in wind shielding. The ceramic radiant burner is another nice feature because it helps spread heat more evenly across your cookware instead of concentrating it in one spot. So when you're trying to get breakfast going on a breezy morning, you're getting more consistent heat without having to constantly fight the flame.

Now, I wouldn't expect any portable stove to perform perfectly in strong winds, but you shouldn't have to hunt down a completely sheltered spot every time a breeze comes through. I'd still recommend setting it up somewhere protected from stronger gusts, and I wouldn't add a makeshift windscreen around the stove since that could trap heat around the butane canister. You've also got 9,000 Btu of heating power and built in ignition, which makes getting breakfast started pretty straightforward.

Are you usually camping at established campgrounds or setting up camp in more open areas where the wind can really pick up?
