Question:

Im towing a 2026 Aliner Scout lite camper with a 2021 Mazda CX5. I want to be careful with my tongue weight which most not exceed 200 lbs. Can this scale measure weights between 100 and 300 lbs and in what increments? I need a scale that can accurately measure weights in this range. I wish there was a cheaper scale but the less expensive mechanical scales seem to only work with higher weights. Any advice?

Hello Joe,

It's good to hear from you again!

We actually chatted a little about this scale in your previous question, and I still think the B&W Digital Tongue Weight Scale # BW34KR is going to be your best option.

Yes, it will measure tongue weights between 100 and 300 lbs, and it displays the weight in 5 lb increments. Since you're trying to stay under that 200 lb limit with your 2021 Mazda CX-5, I really like having those smaller increments rather than trying to read a mechanical gauge. I attached 2 images, one showing a 5 pound reading, the other showing a 10 pound reading.

I completely understand wishing there was a less expensive option. We do have the Big Truck Big RV Tongue Weight Scale # BTBRV004, but it reads in 20 lb increments and has a stated accuracy of plus or minus 50 lbs. With such a small margin to work with, I just wouldn't feel comfortable recommending that one for your setup.

One other thing I want to mention is that for a properly balanced trailer, you will want your tongue weight to fall between 10% and 15% of your trailer's total loaded weight. You'll also need to stay within that 200 lb tongue weight limit, so it's important to make sure both numbers work together.

I know the B&W is a little more of an investment, but it's still the one I recommend for your Aliner. Once you buy a B&W product, you become a customer for life.

Thank you Kate, I do appreciate all of the effort you put into your replies. I could got to a CAT scale but that's a hassle to do each time you load out so I'm thinking this digital scale is the best solution. No trips yet, just got it home and I'm winterizing it. Next spring I'll be taking it to Ft. Picken's campground in Pensicola Florida for a few weeks. Thanks again for all of your help! Joe

@JoeC That will be quite the awesome camping trip! One of my favorite things is hearing about where our neighbors (customers) will be going camping, or where they will be camping. A fort that was built in the 1830s, all that history is so awesome, being around that kind of history gives me chills. etrailer has a long history as well, Theodore Bross opened a blacksmith shop in Flint Hill, Missouri in the late 1800's and the Bross family never quit, they just grew with the times.
