Receiver Position and Ground Clearance of Trailer Hitches for 2026 Toyota Highlander

Updated 11/04/2026 | Published 11/02/2026

Question:

Hello, I am attempting to choose between the several class III receivers that you have available for a 2026 Toyota Highlander. I want a receiver that is mostly hidden behind the rear bumper. Several receivers meet this requirement. Of those, I would like the 2” square receiver tube to be tucked in under the bumper to the greatest extent possible. Is there much difference between the available receivers in where the opening of the 2” square tube lies relative to the rear bumper fascia? Thank you, Jeff

Hey Jeff! The Class III hitches we carry for your 2026 Toyota Highlander all sit in relatively the same position vertically, so you won't see much difference in ground clearance between them. The bigger difference is how far the receiver opening sticks out from the bumper.

If you're looking for the receiver that sits furthest underneath the bumper, I'd go with the EcoHitch # EH35VR. We don't have exact measurements comparing the receiver positions, but you can see in the installed pictures that the EcoHitch sits slightly recessed underneath the bumper, while the other options stick out past it. Keep in mind, some of this is dependent on the trim level.

My personal recommendation would be our etrailer Hitch # e75ZR. It has a hidden cross tube and matte black finish that blends in nicely underneath the bumper. Unless you specifically need the receiver tucked a little further back, I don't think the additional cost of the EcoHitch is necessary.

What will you be using the hitch for?

Installed the Eco Hitch on my 2022 Highlander XSE. Very happy with the results, the hitch is tucked back and up giving it an OEM look, I purchased a Toyota hitch plug to give it that factory look. Had to do minimal trimming on bumper parts and the exhaust worked out great.

@SteveC sounds like you got exactly the look you were going for! I like the idea of adding the Toyota hitch plug to finish it off too. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Robin, Thanks for the reply. I will be using the receiver primarily for a bike rack, carrying two electric bikes.

@JeffS you're welcome! Either hitch will work well for carrying two electric bikes, so it really comes down to how far you want the receiver tucked under the bumper. Just keep in mind that a more recessed receiver can make clearance with certain bike racks a little tighter.
