Will the Lippert 86-1/2" Trailer Axle Fit My Trailer if the Spring Centers Are Different?

Published 10/28/2026

Question:

Im replacing a bent axle on my utility trailer, and my current axle measures 86-1/2inch from hub face to hub face. Im looking at the Lippert Trailer Axle LC288NV, but Im not sure if the spring mounting locations will match my trailer. What measurements do I need to check to make sure this axle fits?

The Lippert Trailer Axle # LC288NV is a great option if you're replacing a damaged or worn-out axle, but matching the 86-1/2" hub-face measurement is only half the equation. This axle has a 5,200-lb capacity, 68-1/2" spring centers, and a 6 on 5-1/2" wheel bolt pattern. The spring center measurement is taken from the center of one leaf spring to the center of the other, and it's important because those mounting locations need to line up with your trailer's suspension. It is possible to remove the spring seats and weld on new ones in your desired location, but I usually try to avoid this if possible.

Another thing to pay attention to is that this is an overslung axle, meaning the leaf springs mount on top of the axle tube. If your existing trailer has the springs mounted underneath the axle, this won't be a direct replacement without changing the suspension configuration. The kit also includes electric drum brakes and double-eye leaf springs, making it a convenient option when you're replacing more than just the axle beam.

What is the spring-center measurement on your existing axle, and are your leaf springs mounted above or below the axle tube?
