Can I Charge My Dump Trailer Battery While Driving Without Relying on the 7-Way Plug?
Published 10/28/2026 >
Question:
I have a dump trailer with 7,000-lb axles, and the hydraulic pump drains the battery after several loads. My trucks 7-way connector doesnt recharge it fast enough between jobs. Will the Stillwell ReGen Charging System ST263VR keep my dump trailer battery charged while Im driving, or do I still need to plug it into a battery charger?

Hey Fred, thanks for reaching out. Yes, and that's exactly the problem the Stillwell ReGen # ST263VR system is designed to solve. Instead of relying on the limited charging power coming through your truck's 7-way connector, the ReGen system generates electricity from the trailer's rotating wheels while you're driving. It uses generator components integrated into the brake assembly to replenish the battery after operating your hydraulic dump pump. That makes it especially handy when you're making multiple trips to the dump site throughout the day and don't have time to stop and recharge the battery.
Stillwell reports that a system installed on one axle can replenish the energy used for a dump cycle in approximately 20 minutes of driving above 25 mph, with actual charging performance depending on operating conditions. The # ST263VR is listed for 7K axles with 9/16" studs, so matching the axle and hub configuration is important before ordering. You'll still want a properly charged battery to start with, and occasional external charging may be necessary depending on how often you're dumping compared to driving.
Are you making several short trips between dump sites, or are you hauling longer distances where the trailer has more time to recharge between loads?
