Does Female Side of 7-Way Trailer Adapter for Towing Trailers with LED Lights Need Mounting

Updated 10/29/2026 | Published 10/27/2026

Question:

I need a 7-way adapter to attach my all led trailer to a 2027 Palisade, which currently is not sensing the trailer. I understand 20142 adapter will cure this. However I don’t see how the free end is mounted. Does it have to be or can you just plug the trailer plug into it.

Hey James, this is a great question but a lot of the time people don't mount the female side of the 7-way adapter part # C57003 and they just let it hang like you put it. You can see what I mean in the attached picture. Or if you wanted you could attach it to your tow vehicle if you wanted as it comes with a mounting bracket and holes but it's not the typical install. What kind of trailer are you towing?

A new 6x12 tandem axle box trailer with brakes and led lights. My new 2027 Palisade recognizes the trailer being attached, but does not bring up the trailer software on the screen to enter info about the trailer. Suggestions were to increase the electrical load with this device

@JamesQ that's interesting. Have you read where this adapter worked for this situation? It continues to amaze me how vehicle manufacturers continue to make trailer wiring more and more complicated when it used to be very simple haha.

@JamesonC Interesting that you say that. Isn’t that purpose of this. Isn’t that the purpose for the 20142 adapter? Is this compatible with the 2027 palisade?

@JamesQ it is the purpose of this...but usually it's a German vehicle thing and sometimes it's hit or miss for some vehicles. I wasn't trying to add confusion or doubt I was just curious if you'd read that it worked specifically on your vehicle.

The Curt adapter worked for me. I had a similar issue with my 2026 Chevrolet HD2500 Silverado and my 30' 2017 Airstream that started on our first 2-month trip in March 2026. It would sense I had a burned-out turn signal and go into hyper flash. However, the turn signals worked. They are LED. LED running lights worked. LED brake lights would work (at least when I looked at them). Occasionally, I would get a trailer disconnect warning. No issues with the previous 2017 HD2500. I called OneStar, and they said there were no warnings for my model, but updated my software. It did not help. I was told to clean the 7-pin receptacle and trailer plug with contact cleaner - no help. I was then told to replace the trailer's 7-pin connector - also no help. I read where previous HD2500 models had an issue sensing LED trailer lights. It was recommended I splice 1K ohm resistors into the wiring, which required me to disassemble my trailer's front couch bed to access, which I did not want to do. Upon my return, I took my vehicle into my dealer to see what the issue was. They had no bulletins from Chevrolet, and ran a 3-hour test and all tested OK. I then ran across the Curt adaptor. Checked with the dealer and they never heard of it but said it would not compromise the vehicle warranty. After I purchased it, I never had the issue again. So, it worked well. It does make the cable connection longer, so I looped it once and tye-wrapped it twice. It's held up all summer.

We bought a brand new Ford truck and when we would hook it up to our fifth wheel the right side brake light and turn signal would quit working as soon as the brake was applied once. So we tried everything changing the lights everything and at some point just decided to try this in case it was an LED issue and once we started plugging that in we’ve had no issues since using that when we tow that adapter has worked perfectly and made travel less stressful.

I used it with slide in camper, did not mount it at all, worked great with 2024 Chevrolet 2500HD pickup.

I have it mounted to the tow hitch of my 05 Cayenne S. I used a 6in 1.5x 1/8 aluminum angle and couple of bolts to build a custom bracket. This way the adapter stays in place all the time, have less stress, longer life and excellent connection.I have it for probably more than a year with heavy use and many automatic car washes, no complains. The only annoying thing is when the trailer is disconnected I would get the "check trailer lights" message, because the adapter stays plugged. Other than that this adapter is the only one that fixed my LED lights issue, now they work perfectly, I'm happy.
