Can I Run Curt 4 Way Power Wire To Cigarette 12V Outlet In Back Of Promaster Instead Of Battery?

Question:
Looking for trailer wiring kit for my 2023 Ram Promaster 2500. I have a 12-volt cigarette lighter type outlet in the passenger side rear door pillar, Can I wire the controller power line to that outlet, rather than routing all the way up to the battery? Reason I ask is that this is a camper van conversion and routing cable to the front of the vehicle will be a bit of a challenge.

Hey Jim,
I understand wanting to avoid running that power wire all the way to the battery.
The Curt Wiring Harness 4 way flat # C58DR uses a maximum 15-amp fuse and calls for 12-gauge power wire. If your rear 12V outlet has a dedicated circuit rated for at least 15 amps with appropriately sized wiring, it could potentially work, although Curt recommends connecting directly to the battery.
If the outlet is only rated for 10 amps, you could end up blowing its fuse when the trailer lights draw more power. I'd also make sure the outlet isn't shared with other accessories and remains powered when needed.
Just keep in mind that connecting directly to the battery is still the manufacturer-approved installation method, but you're welcome to explore this alternative as long as the circuit and wiring can safely handle the load! :)
What do you plan to tow with it?
