Question:
I need to replace damaged safety chains for a trailer with an axle rating of 3,500 pounds. Removing the nuts which hold the chains to the trailer will be difficult absent removing the jack to create an easier working space. Can I cut the damaged chain at the third link and use a quick link to attach the new chain at the second link of the original chain, which is not damaged see photo?

Thanks for the picture Norm. You can definitely cut off a damaged safety chain link without having to remove the nuts on that mounting bolt. Going a couple links down from the mounting bolt will be the easiest way to replace your damaged chains. I recommend using two of the Curt Threaded Quick Link item # C82932 and the CE Smith Safety Chains with S-Hooks item # CES62QR.
The Curt Threaded Quick Link item # C82932 is sold individually and measures 4-1/4" in overall length and 1-3/4" in width. It has a break strength load limit of 16,500 lbs so it will definitely be strong enough to secure your trailer to your tow vehicle if it becomes uncoupled.
The CE Smith Safety Chains item # CES62QR are sold as a pair and measure 24" long. They have a 5,000 lbs capacity and include S-hooks on each end for an easy connection to your hitch's safety chain loops.
What kind of trailer do you have and what do you use it for? Feel free to answer this and throw in any other questions you have, where it says Add Comment.

Thanks, Jerred, for the prompt reply and the detail of it. I have a 17' Casita that has 5/16 chains and a latch on the S hook. Do you have a chain of that size or a little bigger, but given existing links to use I likely won't get any or much benefit from such, I would think. Kindest regards, Norm
