Question:
I'm comparing the Thule Arcos XL with the Yakima EXO enclosed carrier for our SUV's 2" hitch. We need room for luggage and camping gear, but we also want to get into the back at rest stops without unloading everything. What are the main reasons to choose one over the other?

Hey Michael! I'd choose the Thule Arcos XL Enclosed Cargo Carrier # TH528KQ if your main goal is carrying more gear. It gives you 15.9 cubic feet of storage compared to the 10 cubic feet in the Yakima EXO # Y62VR. The Thule sits low to help with hatch access, but the included platform doesn't tilt or swing away, so clearance depends on your SUV and hitch. You also get the benefit of lights for added visibility.
The Yakima EXO Swing Away Enclosed Cargo Carrier # Y62VR is the better choice when you want the loaded box out of the way for easier access to the back. The base lets you move the carrier aside without unloading your gear. You can also add a second tier and box for additional storage # Y74ZR, but the cost will be quite a bit higher. A compatible bike rack # Y24VR is also available separately, so it gives you more options as your needs change.
Where are you headed once you get your new cargo carrier?

We're heading to Yellowstone next summer. I'm leaning toward the Arcos since we don't really need the swing-away feature and I like the built-in lights.
