Does Chevy Tahoe Have Higher Towing Capacity When Using Weight Distribution

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 10/14/2025

Question:

I am considering moving from a GMC 2500 to a Chevrolet Tahoe to get more seating but the max tongue weight is 800 lbs. Many RVs that I am considering have a hitch weight of 1000 lbs or more. Will a weight distribution system make this possible assuming the trailer weight is within the towing capacity of the Tahoe? Thanks for your support.

Hey Austin, if the tongue weight rating of the Tahoe can be increased with the use of a weight distribution system it will be listed as having a second higher tongue weight capacity under a section that says "weight distribution". The non weight distribution capacity would be listed as "weight carrying."

I tried looking up the weight capacity of a Chevy Tahoe with a WD system and it doesn't look like it has an increased capacity when using one.

Hey Austin, were you able to find out if your Tahoe lists a higher tongue weight when using a weight distribution system? Knowing what you discovered could really help others comparing tow ratings between trucks and SUVs.
