Hey Tim, sounds like you are on the right track here. The Tekonsha # 118408 is exactly what you need to add a 4-flat to your 2008 Jeep Commander without the tow package.

As far as adding the 7-way, there are two options I want to cover.

If you just want to mount a 7-way without running any additional wires, you can use an adapter like part # 337TC1474P. This will plug into the current 4-flat and give you a 4-flat and 7-way combo. Keep in mind this will only be for brake lights, taillights and turn signals. No brakes.

If you want to install a fully functional 7-way along with the wires for a brake controller, use the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7. This comes with the adapter I mentioned above, as well as all the other parts needed to wire the 7-way. If you think you will ever need to tow a trailer with brakes, it might make the most sense to just get the # ETBC7 kit since it will come with the parts you need for now, and potentially later. We can do it either way though.

I have included a diagram that shows how the # ETBC7 is wired.

What kind of trailer do you plan to pull? Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Hey Tim, how did things go with adding the wiring harness and 7-way plug on your Jeep Commander? Did the adapter setup give you the functions you needed without the brake wiring? Your update could make it easier for others working on the same upgrade.
