If I Remove My Factory Roof Rack, Am I Able To Install An Aftermarket Option?

Updated 08/14/2025 | Published 08/13/2025

Question:

I have a 2024 Dodge Durango with their stock flush mounted roof rack with stowable cross bars. If I remove these side rails, would I be able to install a rack for a naked roof?

Hey Randall,

Theoretically yes, if you are able to remove the side rails a roof rack for a naked roof like # RR32VE would be able to be installed. With that said I am not entirely sure what goes into removing that factory rack so I am not sure how difficult it would be or even if at all possible. That may be something you need to reach out to a dealership regarding.

If you are able to get those removed then yes a roof rack for a naked roof would install like normal. What are you looking to use the new rack for?

Thank you for the response. Needing a rack for a canoe. The next issue will be that with the back door swept forward, the roof rack will be quite far forward and about two inches lower at the front which may cause the 14' canoe to block vision at the front. I'm hoping I don't have to be the first one to try it and so would welcome any responses from people who have tried to put a canoe onto a 2024 Durango equipped with factory side rails. I have made my own rack out of Superstrut using the existing clamp points on the factory side rails but it doesn't look pretty.

@Randalll I know in general any canoe on any vehicle roof is gonna hang over the front, how much just depends on the length of your car vs the canoe. Considering that average Durango is around 16 feet long it it going to hang over the front a significant amount since you wont want it hanging off of the rear too much. I have personally seen many with kayaks, but not a canoe. It just comes down to placement of the roof rack and how you position it when mounted.
