Should I Use The Trailer Hitch Capacity Or My Vehicle's Listed Capacity As The Max Capacity?

Question:
Hello! Im looking some of your hitches, but I have a question regarding towing/tongue capacities. Nissan has the towing capacity at 1500 lbs but with Blue Ox, its listed as 4000 lbs. Which is correct?

Hi Dominic!
Trailer hitches will almost always be rated higher than the vehicle. This is due to them being tested to the weight they list (actually more than that) and found that said weight was a safe working load. As a rule though, you are always limited by the lowest rated component. If the vehicle is rated to 1,500 pounds and the hitch is rated to 4,000 pounds, you will be limited to the 1,500 pounds the vehicle can handle.
What vehicle are you looking to add a hitch to? I saw you had a 2025 Infiniti QX50 in our fit-guide and that should be able to tow up to 3,000 pounds when properly equipped.
