Tow Dolly for Moving 500 lb Trailer

Updated 08/15/2025 | Published 07/22/2025

Question:

Hello, Im looking to purchase a manual trailer dolly for use with my log splitter, which weights a bit under 500 lbs. I would need to move the splitter in and out of a woodshed - on grass and dirt not on any kind of paved or smooth surface like a driveway. Ive noticed two types of manual dollies - a 600 lb capacity one with no caster, and an 800 lb capacity one with a third wheel or caster. Will either of these work on a hard grass not a manicured lawn or dirt surface? Would the version with the caster be better or would that tend to get bogged down? Thanks! Michael

Hey Michael, I would go with the Flint Hill Goods trailer dolly part # FHG84ZR as it has larger rubber tires which would handle the terrains you mentioned as long as the inclines aren't too bad.

Hey Michael, how did the Flint Hill Goods trailer dolly work out for moving your log splitter on the grass and dirt? I'm curious to know if it handled the terrain well, as it could help others in similar situations.
