Will The Pace Edwards Cover Secure The Truck Bed If My Truck Does Not Have A Locking Tailgate?

Question:

My1982 Chevy short bed does not have a locking tailgate. Will this style tonneau cover prevent the tailgate from being opened when the cover is locked?

Hey Bob,

The Pace Edwards Full-Metal Tonneau Cover # 311-FEC1329 does have that locking feature to secure cargo. However, it does state that in order to secure the truck bed the cover does need to be used in conjunction with a locked tailgate. If yours doesn't lock you would still be able to open the tailgate.

I have not seen a style out there that secures the whole truck bed without a lockable tailgate. That looks like a nice Chevy though, is it a rebuild?

Thanks Nick. It’s just another nice Frankenstein truck from 82. Originally a diesel now a TBI 350. I am working on a solution to secure the tailgate from the inside since there doesn’t seem to be any aftermarket products available. Once I have that sorted I will order a cover so I can hide my golf clubs.

@Bob That is still pretty cool, I have always loved older vehicles. The 63' and 82' Stingray have got to be my favorites, Chevy did those right. Before I fangirl on golf since I play often, I recommend reaching out to a company called Pop & Lock LLC. They make aftermarket tailgate locks for vehicles that did not come with one. With that said we do not carry one for that year, but if anyone could make it happen it is probably going to be them. I know its not the perfect answer but they may be able to get something working for you. Let me know what they say if you reach out, if there is no luck I will keep digging on solutions.
