Will the Onan QG 7000 CM34RR Be Quiet Down Enough for California Campgrounds (Sequoia)?

Published 06/17/2025

Question:

We are thinking about upgrading to a QG 7000 CM34RR on our Forest River Sandpiper 38BHOK for the added power. But how quiet is it at full load? We’re headed to Sequoia National Park where generator noise limits are strict — under 60 dB at 50 feet. Are we going to pass the “neighbor test”?

That’s a great question Drake — California state and national parks do not mess around when it comes to many things, including decibel limits. But good news: the Onan QG 7000 # CM34RR with the Cummins gas engine is rated at 70 dBA at 10 feet under full load. At the 50-foot mark — where sound readings are usually taken for campground rules — it dips below the typical 60 dBA threshold, especially when not maxed out.

Many of our California RVers with big rigs and dual A/Cs rely on this unit and haven't run into trouble at Sequoia, Lassen, or even Big Sur. Still, we always recommend checking the specific park regulations just in case.

How long are you planning to camp in Sequoia? If you’re staying multiple days, we’ve got some tips to stretch fuel and power. :)
