Is the Cummins Onan QG 7000 Generator CM34RR Safe to Run in Wet Conditions?

Updated 07/02/2025 | Published 06/17/2025

Question:

We do a lot of off-grid camping in Oregon where it rains often. Is the QG 7000 CM34RR safe to run in constant mist or drizzle? Do you recommend a specific weatherproof cover or vented enclosure for extended use? In Oregon mainly.

Hey Henry - the Cummins Onan Quiet Series Onboard RV Generator - 7,000 Watts - Gasoline # CM34RR is weather-resistant, but not fully waterproof. It can handle mist, dew, and light rain, but for consistent wet weather use (like Oregon’s backcountry), we definitely recommend running it inside a ventilated generator compartment or investing in a rain shield or cover. A lot of folks also rig a lean-to or mini awning over their generator hatch when dry camping in the Northwest if they don't have a designated generator compartment/tray.

Keep in mind: the key is airflow. These units run hot under load, so keeping them dry and ventilated is the balance.

How are you setting up your off-grid power — built-in compartment or portable operation?

We had a few heavy storms roll through while we were parked in Oregon, and our QG 7000 kept chugging without issue. We mounted it under an aluminum skirt with venting, and it’s stayed dry and happy.

@StevenS It sounds like you’ve got a solid setup! Keeping it protected while maintaining airflow is the perfect balance. The QG 7000 handles moisture well when used properly — really appreciate you sharing your install and experience in wet weather conditions.
