Will The Reese M5 or Curt A25 Let You Couple While Not In Line With Your Trailer?

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 05/14/2025

Question:

Currently I have a BandW companion puck hitch for my 2024 Ram 3500. However, I need to go to a Curt a25 or Reese m5 to lower the front of the RV. I have read that the BandW will allow you to hitch/unhitch without the truck and RV being in line and have experienced that this is true but that the Curt does not function well if the truck and rv are not lined up straight to each other. Is this true? Is this because of the jaw design? Would the same hold true for the Reese m5?

Hey Michael,

That self align feature allowing you to couple your trailer while not being aligned is becoming very popular. With that said both the Reese and Curt that you mentioned allow you to do that.

Both the Reese M5 # RP30918 and the Curt # C16046 have a fully articulating head creating a larger landing zone for the coupler. The V-notch style coupler on the hitch allows you to back in at hard angles and guide the trailer into the 5th wheel hitch so you do not have to be perfectly in line. If you are needing to go with another hitch due to the front end of the trailer I recommend the Curt # C16046 which will give you 3 more inches lower than the companion. The Reese is a good option, I have just seen the Curt hitch have a smoother latch when not in line.

What kind of capacity are you towing and needing on your hitch?

Hey Michael, Did you find that the Curt hitch provided the lower front end you were looking for on your RV? I'm curious because it could help others deciding between these hitches.
