Best AC Unit To Add To 1992 Ford F350 Ambulance Conversion
Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 03/09/2025 >
Question:
Will this product work for a 1992 Ford E350 Ambulance conversion? Pic included. This vehicle does have a structurally sound box frame. I’m not exactly sure of the thickness of the ceiling structure. I do like the idea of this product, but if you recommend a different one, I would be open to suggestions. Thank you Michael Black

Hey Michael. That ambulance conversion is awesome! While we are in Missouri, and I am a Chiefs fan (I know, I know), that thing would be fun to tailgate in regardless of team affiliation. Honestly the commanders had a great season and were super fun to watch this year. Still, that ambulance is one of the coolest things I've seen in a while, and hopefully I can help make it cooler!
As far as adding an AC unit, the main thing to consider is the roof thickness, and the strength of the roof. The Dometic Penguin II # DMC48ZR you were looking at weighs about 97 lbs. I am not sure of the weight capacity of your roof. In some cases additional support structure will need to be added.
Also, the Penguin II AC unit requires the roof to be between 1-1/2" and 6" thick. So depending on how thick your roof is, again additional material may need to be added.
The distribution box or ceiling register installs directly below the AC unit, then you have your controls and thermostat directly overhead on the distribution box. It would be possible to do a setup with a wall thermostat if you want, but that would require additional wiring.
All of that said, my recommendation for you is the Advent Air Low Profile RV AC # ASA49YR. This is complete AC system so you get your AC unit, distribution box, a start capacitor, and a heat strip. Everything you need to add an AC unit. This will work with roofs between 2-1/2" and 5" thick. The AC unit itself weighs only 69 lbs.
You are not dealing with a ton of square footage here so even a 13.5K BTU unit will effectively cool things down. I am sure this will make tailgating a lot more comfortable early in the season. Then you will have the heat strip to help warms things up later in the season (and playoffs hopefully). Just keep in mind the heat strip is not a substitute for a furnace or heater. All it will do it take the chill out of the air on cold days.
Also, we can do the rooftop unit in black if you prefer that.
I hope this helps. Leave a reply below with any other questions or comments. I am happy to continue to assist.

Hey Michael, how did things go with the Advent Air Low Profile AC for your ambulance conversion? Were you able to confirm the roof thickness and get it mounted securely? Your update could make it easier for others working on similar builds.
