We've had several positive reviews of the Tow Ready wiring harness part # 118474. This is the first time we've heard of one shorting out after winter. Typically these thing short out because of a short on the trailer wiring. Before you install another unit I would recommend you go over your trailer wiring looking for any corrosion or cut or exposed wires and fix as necessary. It could even be corrosion on the vehicle side 4-way from being out in the elements all winter long.
Curt harnesses tend to be harder to short out. They use a more modern circuit board than the Tow Ready products and tent to be more reliable. If you check out the specs section on both of the products you will see that the Curt harness actually has higher max amperage ratings so it would resist shorting better.
Tow Ready:
Maximum amperage:
Stop/turn lights: 2.1 amps per circuit
Tail lights: 5.6 amps per circuit
Curt:
Maximum amperage:
Stop/turn lights: 3 amps per circuit
Tail lights: 6 amps per circuit
