How To Troubleshoot A Non-Functioning 7-Way Extension

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 01/01/2025

Question:

Ive got a 2005 F350 Dually diesel with a stock OEM 7 pin wiring harness. Ive added a 10foot extension which runs from my truck to the end of my 48inch super truss extension. when I plug in a Hopkins 7 pin tester all functions work properly. When I plug the extension into my trailer with electric brakes the right brake light remains illuminated and the other trailer functions do not work properly. How can I use a single probe tester to determine what is wrong with the trailer wiring. Thank you

Hey Greg,

When testing your 7-way and extension you can use either a multimeter # PT89ZR or a circuit tester # PTW2993. You'll put the negative test probe or ground clamp (depending on your tool) to the 7-way ground pin or vehicle frame and then the positive probe will be used to test each function.

This will be no different with the extension, you'd just plug it into the vehicle's 7-way and then test the other end to ensure that the signals are still coming through. If you aren't getting a specific signal then from 7-way you'll need to check the wiring for damage and see if the fuse for that light function is blown. If you're getting the signal at the 7-way but not the end of the extension then we know there's either internal damage to the extension or it was wired incorrectly.

I've attached a diagram of the 7-way functions to make your testing process easier. If you have any other questions just let me know in the comments below and I'd be happy to help.

Hey Greg, how did your testing go with the multimeter or circuit tester on the 7-way and extension? Were you able to track down what was causing the right brake light to stay on? Sharing what you found could help others chasing similar wiring issues.
