We have everything you need to install a brake controller on your 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. For a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller, # 90195. This is one of the top brake controllers on the market because it is easy to use and set up.
There are no plug-in style brake controller harnesses for the 2006 Grand Cherokee, so it will need to be hardwired. If your Jeep already has the factory tow package with the 7-way trailer connector, then all you will need to complete the installation is our Brake Controller Wiring Kit, # 5506. This kit includes all of the additional wiring and hardware needed to complete the installation.
There will be 4 wires coming from the brake controller that need to be connected. The black 12v power wire and white ground wire from the brake controller should be routed to the Jeep's battery using the duplex cable included in the wiring kit. The black wire should run through the 20-amp circuit breaker before connecting to the positive battery terminal. The blue wire will be connected to a light green wire bundled up under the dash to the left of the steering column for the brake controller output power. The green wire is already connected to the 7-way at the back of the Jeep. Finally, the red wire is connected to the cold side of the brake light switch. The brake light switch is located on the brake pedal arm. You will see 4 to 5 wires coming out of the switch. Using a circuit tester, like part # PTW2993, you want to test for the wire that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed and splice in the red wire from the brake controller. Jeep traditionally used a white wire with a tan stripe for this wire, so I recommend starting there.
If you Jeep does not have the factory tow package, then you will need additional trailer wiring. The first wiring harness you will need is a 4-way flat trailer connector, if you do not already have this. For this, I recommend the Curt T-Connector, # C55451.
Next, you will want our Universal 7-Pole and 4-Pole Installation Kit, # ETBC7. You will not need the brake controller wiring kit, # 5506, if you purchase the # ETBC7 kit because it is included. I have attached installation instructions for the ETBC7 kit for you to check out. Keep in mind, this is a universal kit, so it was designed to work with many different vehicles. I have attached an installation video on a Jeep Liberty to give you an idea on what is involved with the installation.
