Hell Chris.
Yes, the Hopkins EasyLift Truck Bed Tailgate Lift Assist # 74211 is a Universal fit so it will work with your 1979 Ford F150. There is drilling required for installation. I know that with the older models it might take some slight modifications to the instructions. Unfortunately, we have not been able to test fit a 1979, so I am not sure what modifications would need to be made.
