Solution for Towing Honda Goldwing with 4-Way with Trailer with 5-Way

Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 10/12/2024

Question:

I have a triked Goldwing 2015 with a trailer hitch and 4 wire flat connector. I bought a trailer to pull behind, but it has a 5 wire flat connector. What do I need to make the 2 work together? Modify the trailer or bike?

Hey Al, so the reason the trailer has a 5-way is because motorcycles have the stop lights and the turn signals on different circuits normally. Your Goldwing sounds like it has a taillight converter installed on it already so that it can be used with the standard type of trailer taillight setup where the circuits are combined.

While there isn't an adapter available I can tell you how to make one. You will need a wiring converter like the part # RM-732, a 4-way to plug into your Ranger wiring like part # HM48110 and a 5-way to the trailer like part # HM47900.

On the input side of the converter you will need to match the yellow and green colors from the # HM48110. On the output side of the converter the yellow and green wires will match up to the yellow and green of the # HM47900, the red wire from the converter will run to the blue wire and the white wire will match up to the white wire.

The brown wire from the 4-way will bypass the converter and will run straight to the 5-way.

Hey Al, how did things go getting your Goldwing’s 4-wire setup matched to the trailer’s 5-wire connector? Your update could make it easier for others trying to wire a similar trike and trailer combo.
