Question:

Can I do 3 bikes and a small cargo carrier in this space ? Or will I need a rear mount carrier for the bikes ? Thanks

Since you need to carry 3 bikes and cargo, I recommend a trunk mount bike carrier and a roof rack to carry your cargo.

The bike carrier I recommend for your 2012 Mazda 3 is the Thule Passage, part # TH911XT. This carrier has dual folding arms, and uses the patented FitDial system to secure the bike carrier to the rear of your Mazda.

If you plan on carrying bikes with alternative frames like women's bikes or kids bikes I recommend an adapter bar like part # TH982XT. This attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bikes to be carried more evenly in the carrier while providing more ground clearance.

If your Mazda is a 4-door and has the fixed mounting points and has no existing rails or crossbars, the Thule Aeroblade Roof Rack System would be a good fit for you. This system attaches to the OEM fixed mounting points on the roof of your vehicle and are extremely quiet. The numbers you need to order for this system is part # TH7602-TH7602, and part # THKIT3069.

I recommend a cargo bag like the Thule Outbound Rooftop Cargo Bag, part # TH869. This attaches to the crossbars and gives you 16 cu ft of storage on the roof of your vehicle.

You will want to do is check your owner's manual or with your dealership to make sure you do not exceed the vehicle roof weight capacity.
