Ive got a tear style camper trailer. It is 2520 pounds with a gross of 3320. The tongue weight is 320 pounds. I would like to relocate the battery and propane bottle to rear of the axle, remove a storage tray that is on the tongue and replace it with a motorcycle rack. The bike is about 400 pounds loaded. Removing roughly 100 pounds from the tongue should lower the tongue weight to roughly 250 pounds, do I get any additional tongue weight reduction by relocating those behind the axle? Would a weight distribution hitch help me with my now 600ish pound tongue weight? My vehicle is rated at 400 pound max tongue, the hitch says 400 pound max tongue weight, 600 pound maximum WD TW. Hey Steven, yes you would gain some additional tongue weight by relocating those items to the rear but how much is going to depend on how much those items weigh.
Using a weight distribution hitch like the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BLU36FR will bring your tongue weight up because the weight is distributed more evenly, but you'd have to check what the hitch says to find out how much tongue weight capacity you'd have.
So, if you had the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13235 for instance, you'd have an increased tongue weight of 600 from 400 lbs when using a weight distribution hitch.
