Can I Carry A Rooftop Tent On A 2015 Honda Pilot With OEM Roof Rails?

Updated 02/04/2026 | Published 07/08/2024

Question:

I want to put a roof top tent on my 2015 Honda Pilot Touring edition, but I keep seeing comments that the OEM roof rails cannot support the weight of a tent and 1-2 occupants. Is there a way to fortify the OEM rails?

Hello Paul, thanks for reaching out. There is no "by the book" way of fortifying the OEM rails on your 2015 Honda Pilot. I always recommend that you verify the carrying capacity of your roof with a dealership. If the rails are not rated for the weight of a tent like the Yakima SkyRise HD # Y07437, there is no way around this aside from getting a different vehicle with a stronger roof.

Hey Paul, were you able to confirm the roof weight capacity with your Honda dealer? Knowing what you found could help others thinking about adding a roof top tent to their Pilot.

@JesseM, Unfortunately, yes. Its like 65 lbs. Great for a suitcase or two, not so great for sleeping a person or two

@PaulM Ah yea 65 lbs doesn't give you much room to work with. A lot of times when people run a rooftop tent setup its with a vehicle that is more purpose-built for carrying weight on the roof. Jeep Wrangler is a really popular one. That or get a small pop-up tent trailer.
